Afraid Of Stairs
Lavender
Magnificent new CDEP by Afraid of Stairs, which is also the first release from the new Swedish label Lavender Recordings. Afraid Of Stairs is a Gothenburg based pop duo in the same vein as shoegazing bands in the early 90's, released on legendary labels such as Sarah Records and Creation. Pontus Wallgren, who started this band with Max Sjöholm, is also founder and member of Douglas Heart. He has also played the guitar with Franke. On this EP, Afraid Of Stairs have incorporated the influence of their friends. Malin Dahlberg, from Douglas Heart and Laurel Music as well as her solo project We Are Soldiers We Have Guns, is adding her angelic voice to the dreamy songs on this EP. With an equal proportion of fuzz guitars along with some really strong pop melodies, Afraid of Stairs create their own sound, and the specific atmosphere associated with it. At the same as the guitars are layered over the sensitive vocals, the structure and the production of the songs on this CDEP, pinpoint the fact that the melodies are always key in Afraid Of Stairs' music. Tracklist: “Tell Him How You Feel”, “Let Me”, “When Nothing” and “They Aimed Bad”.

Bubblegum Lemonade is principally a man called Laz, a 12-string Rickenbacker enthusiast with more than a few Velvet Underground, Byrds, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Razorcuts records in his collection. This is a lovely gem of jangly indiepop – just the way it was made in the mid to late 80’s when Primal Scream and Razorcuts updated The Byrds and created a sound just as lovely and timeless today. Four great songs, including a cover of “That Thing You Do”, the title song from the mid-90’s hit movie of the same name, written by Adam Schlesinger (Ivy, Fountains of Wayne). Second EP from the lovely Glasgow indiepop act Bubblegum Lemonade, merging the sound of The Byrds and The Jesus And Mary Chain! Once described as “the perfect C86 pop band that just happened to turn up 22 years behind schedule”, Bubblegum Lemonade deliver instantly memorable songs with brilliant pop melodies. Title track “Susan's In The Sky” is an everyday tale of an air hostess and her slacker boyfriend caught up in a Romeo and Juliet type scenario. It’s another sunshine wall of pop with Rickenbacker guitars, tambourines and nice organ bits. A short dose of California sunshine perfect for all seasons. Among the EP’s exclusive extra tracks, the cleverly titled “Surfin’ USB” is a proper jangle with fuzzy guitars and a nice Beach Boys coda, while “Just Like You” continues the California theme in a 150 bpm mini classic drenched in Mary Chain feedback with a mix of fuzz and surf guitars. Closing track “Holocaust” is a superb cover of the legendary Big Star classic featuring a mix of Rickenbacker and acoustic guitars. As for the exclusive B-sides, "Phil And Don" is a country duet with great guitar work and some harmonica thrown in for good luck. And "Roman Holiday" has a bossanova beat and a vibraphone arrangement that give it the perfect stylish touch for a song too good to be just a B-side. If these are their B-sides, imagine how good is the album! Tracklist: “Lloyd, I’m Ready To Be Heartbroken”, “Phil And Don”, “Roman Holiday” and “Vídeo Clip (I Love My Jean)”.

When we first saw the Finnish quartet Cats On Fire enter the stage on a beautiful summer’s day in Malmö two years ago, we realized in the blink of an eye that their music does not conform. A classic guitar pop ensemble, they carry on a tradition born in the english 80’s indie scene, where beautifully chiseled chords and jangling guitars join lyrics that do not fear to tackle the important issues of our time. Vocalist and songwriter Mattias Björkas’ lyrics don’t attempt to flee seriousness, at the same time they bring a refreshing sense of dark humour. Along with tunes that have the ability to stick in one’s mind Cats On Fire represent that intelligent kind of pop music we believe many, many people have been anxiously awaiting. Paris And I

CDEP + 7”. You needn’t be out of touch with contemporary music or a nostalgic remnant of some other, long-past era to suspect that pop has, by and large, lost its sense of romance. Not only in terms of its willingness to lyrically explore the lexicon of love without the escape clause of postmodern irony, but the romance of unashamedly grand and eccentric gestures – the inherent romance of outsiders seeking to gently subvert the pop song, reconstructing it as something familiar yet foreign, classicist yet newfangled. Think of the Human League’s “Dare!”, ostensibly a collection of love songs made to sound like science fiction; or New Order’s plainspoken anti-poetry couched in synthetic symphonies that were the very antithesis of the everyday. It is this largely abandoned idea of the velvet melody in the robotic glove to which Champagne Riot aspires. And with its debut EP, “Paris and I”, you hear it realized. Sunrise EP
Matinée
Brilliant Matinée debut from popular Swedish band The Electric Pop Group. The quartet astonished everyone late in 2006 with a self-released debut album that came out of nowhere to make numerous year-end lists and earn countless favorable reviews including comparisons to legendary bands on Creation Records (Razorcuts, Primal Scream, The Pastels, Jesus and Mary Chain) and Sarah Records (The Sea Urchins, Another Sunny Day, Brighter, and The Field Mice). As one of many indie record labels that took notice, Matinée made contact with them just as they started work on new recordings last summer and this EP is the first fruit of those sessions. Especially notable given the band’s name, this EP also marks the addition of acoustic guitars to their repertoire. The EP kicks off with “I Could See The Lights”, an incredible tune and one of the first new songs the band recorded following the success of its debut album. Guitars jangle, drums pound, keyboards chime…the song simply shimmers and will serve as a perfect summertime anthem even in the face of less agreeable weather. It demanded to be released as a single so here it is! In addition to the lead track, the EP features three glorious additional songs: “This Is The Town” is another chiming A-side, an infectious song that features prominent keyboards as the perfect counterpoint to three glistening guitar parts. “Summer’s Day” is a showcase for the newly added acoustic guitar, a fragile song that is similar to and every bit as poignant as the classic track “For Always” by Razorcuts. Finally, “Come And See Me” employs keyboards to great effect, creating a mesmerizing and soaring hit that is an especially lovely way to end the EP for sure. On this release, the band takes its sound - described by one esteemed music writer as “both studiously retrospective and thoroughly contemporary” - and expands it with added instrumentation and superb songwriting. The result is a modern indiepop classic and another sparkling addition to the Matinée discography. Tracklist: “I Could See The Lights”, “This Is The Town”, “Summer's Day” and “Come And See Me”. Highly recommended!

Making a follow-up to the great debut single “The Four Seasons EP” on their own Félicité Singles Club label seems like quite high expectations to live up to... but this one’s even better! Not only the name of the first track is brilliant; “Another Sunny Day” is an ace crossover between the 60’s sunshine pop, Eggstone and the finest of 80’s guitar pop, completed with Janehoneys excellent vocals, ba-da-ba’s and accoustic guitars. As is the case with the first track, both “Hopeless Case” and “The Pop Kid” are true indiepop club floorfillers. Upbeat, punked-up guitars, a pumping bass and echoes of Another Sunny Day, Shop Assistants and The Field Mice. “Don’t Call It” is the slow ending of this four track CDEP, a slice of jazzy melancholia reminding a bit of Marine Girls at their best. Splendid new EP from heralded Scottish band The Hermit Crabs! Following impressive debut single “Feel Good Factor” and album “Saw You Dancing” last year, the Glasgow band spent a year sharpening its live set with shows across the UK plus an appearance at the NYC popfest. The four new songs on this EP accentuate the rich instrumentation present on earlier recordings with a diverse mix of acoustic and electric guitars occasionally embellished with distortion and present a more upbeat, poppy side to their sound. Lead track “About You Before” is a swinging number about summer relationships that boasts melodic vocals, nice orchestration, a soaring chorus and great bursts of percussion. “Correspondence Course”, driven by superb violin arrangements and distorted guitar bits, is another tale about the china girl mentioned on their debut single. “Turn The Clock Back” is a beautifully pensive one about a breakup and the little things you miss when you’re not going out with someone, while “I Don’t Know How” is a classic case of saving the best for last - an upbeat hit with a sixties vibe, surf guitars and a great singalong chorus. Second track, the almost shoegazy “The End Of The World”, demonstrates how Liechtenstein constantly expand their sound. The closing song, “Low Sugar Low Fat”, is an early Liechtenstein song. A 48 seconds sour-sweet punk number with a trumpet topped ending. Tracklist: “Everything´s For Sale”, “The End Of The World” and “Low Sugar Low Fat”. Highly recommended!

”The Never Years” is the great debut CDEP by Jamie Long from USA. But we would have guessed that he’s been living in our neighbourhood here in Göteborg, Sweden, because these seven dreamy tracks have an affinity with the Swedish West Coast movement of ambient electronic/guitar pop, with bands like Boat Club, Air France and The Embassy. This is lovely stuff for fans of The Radio Dept., Boat Club, New Order, The Embassy and The Magnetic Fields! LOVEJOY

England Made Me
Matinée
Impressive follow-up to last year’s “Everybody Hates Lovejoy” album featuring four great new songs. Lead track “Brightness Falls” is perhaps the finest Lovejoy song to date, mixing keyboards and jangling guitars in a twinkling pop hit with ace vocals from Lovejoy supremo Richard Preece. If we lived in a just universe this would be blasting from car stereos all summer long in place of the latest inane hip hop flavor-of-the-week. “Are You Analogue Or Digital?” sports a bit of the pesky electronica that first showed its face on the popular “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” set and also rather nicely recalls the sparkling pop of The Human League, while “In The Rain” is a lusciously paced and mesmerizing cover of the mid-80s indie hit from The June Brides. “Made In England” closes the EP in top form, layering guitars, strings and percussion alongside a rhythmic vocal track with angelic backing—a return of sorts to the chiming orchestral pop of Lovejoy’s debut album “Songs In The Key of Lovejoy”.‘ Hurrah! Tracklist: “Brightness Falls”, “Are You Analogue Or Digital?”, “In The Rain” and “Made In England”.

A Hiccup In Your Happiness
Matinée
Glorious second single lifted from recent album “Warmer Corners” plus three exclusive new tracks validate yet again why The Lucksmiths are among the most popular indie bands of our time. One listen to “A Hiccup In Your Happiness” and you know it’s apt to be blasted from car stereos and iPods all day long. Boasting strings, horns, some seriously funky guitar and a bassline possibly borrowed from Orange Juice, the song is a dancefloor sizzler that just had to be a single. Its magnificent b-sides are all set in actual places: “From Macaulay Station” is an ode to one of the unlovelier stops on Melbourne’s rail network, “Rue Something” a more-or-less factual account of an evening spent on tour in Paris, and “To Absent Votes” a tale of election night in the Australian outback town of Lake Cargelligo. Combined with ‘”A Hiccup In Your Happiness” they create a brilliant EP designed to give ”Warmer Corners” another shot at the glory it deserves.

Following the rapturous reviews of the retrospective collection “R is for.. Razorcuts”, Matinée Recordings have managed to negotiate the release of a further EP's worth of songs from the Razorcuts archive, combining lead cut “A is for Alphabet” from the aforementioned retrospective with four more beloved and much requested Razorcuts classics. The signature Razorcuts jangle is in full effect throughout this EP, from the formative simplistic beauty of rare early demo tracks “Sometimes I Worry About You” and “For Always”, where the shadow of the Television Personalities still looms large, through to the Gene Clark inspired lushness of “Snowbound” from their last long player, 1989's “The World Keeps Turning”. Packaged using period promo imagery from the Razorcuts vaults, this makes a fine companion to the recent retrospective album, or alternatively a fantastic introductory sampler in its own right.
