| The Last Days Of August |
Labrador
| Airliner is basically a solo project from Kristian Rosengren of Aerospace. He’s been writing beautiful and slow pop songs for years and his debut, a split 7” single on Labrador Records, released in 1999. A single which sold out quickly and gained a very good reputation among the pop loving kids around the world. In the spring of 2002, the time was right to start recording the Airliner debut album, “The Last Days Of August”. Johan Angergård of Club 8 and Acid House Kings was hired as producer and the album was recorded in the famous Summersound Studios in Stockholm. The result is here: ten sad and sensitive pop songs about love and loss. For fans of: Trembling Blue Stars, Club 8 and The Montgolfier Brothers. Tracklist: “Trying To Be Clever”, “Everthing That's You”, “One Final Call”, “Nostalgia”, “Always Never”, “Defenses Down”, “Time And Space”, “Always The Last To Know”, “Happiness” and “The Last Days Of August”. |

Brimming with drunken romanticism, sharp pop sensibilities and timeless melodies, the new Aislers’ album offers 11 new musical proofs of the power of classic tunes. | APPLE ORCHARD |
CD
| Half-Steps Toward Bright Skies |
Haymarket
| Two years in the making, “Half-Steps Toward Bright Skies” is Apple Orchard's debut cd. Devised, conceptualized, manipulated, soaked in reverb and realized by brothers Ryan and Dale Marquez, the album, released on the band's own label, Haymarket Recordings, is an assemblage of twelve of the most pensive, melancholic pop tunes the duo has ever written and recorded. Compared to the minimalist lo-fi bedroom pop of the band's early releases, the duo has expanded their sound in Half-Steps Toward Bright Skies as the songs are drenched with layers upon layers of dreamy keyboards and luminous guitars. With song titles like “Weather Patterns” and “Midnight Stars And Kisses”, it's an imperfect soundtrack for the lovelorn, the heartsick and the aimless wanderers. Apple Orchard started out as a solo project by Ryan back in 1999. While listening to a lot of The Sugargliders, The Field Mice, Brighter, Sweet William, a few Sarah Records compilations and playing acoustic guitar along monotonous drum beats off a casiotone became a habit, a few songs were written, mostly schoolboy lyrics and near-whispered melodies. Becoming a duo a year later, Apple Orchard began contributing songs to a number of compilation releases and to this date, has issued three cassette EPs, a 7" single and a 3" cd-r single. Tracklist: “Unfazed”, “Weather Patterns”, “Harsh”, “The Comforts Of Strangers”, “Rain, As We Know It”, “Half-Steps Toward Bright Skies”, “A Fine Warning”, “I Can’t Feel Sorry”, “Dreaming (As The Summer Fades)”, “The Saddest, Perfect Ending”, “Midnight Stars And Kisses” and “The Cloud Fleets”. |

| The Artisans |
Cloudberry
| The first edition of Cloudberry’s new Classics series is a much longed-for reissue of all the songs ever recorded by UK indiepop band The Artisans. Included is the two tracks from the “Jazz Serenade” 7” single, released on their own Infidel Records, two tracks that appearad on Slumberland’s “Why Popstars Can’t Dance” compilation and two previously unreleased songs. When first hearing The Artisans: quite a revelation, and quite a big question mark: why haven’t I heard of this band before? Maybe because they put out their releases in the early 90’s, but sounding a lot like the bands coming out of the C86 movement a couple of years earlier: “Jazz Serenade” sounds almost like a long lost track from The Siddeleys! Tracklist: “Jazz Serenade”, “All I Ever Wanted”, “So Surprised”, “Start Again”, “Tolerance” and “Up to Me”. Highly recommended! |

Intimate, sweet, mysterious, pattering and with a stinch of experiment (Band In Box will explore a new instrument each month), this album is filled with the kind of beautiful bedroom pop that won’t fit in the ordinary bedroom: guitars, clarinet, piano, melodica, violin, flute, glockenspiel... Tracklist: “Icaria II”, “Elevator Theme”, “Lost & Foundland”, “Nocere”, “Let Your Birds Out”, “When Others Go South”, “Leaving Smears”, “I Was A Bubble Boy”, “The Vault”, “A Spoon That You Can Bend”, “Paper View” and “Slow Release”. |

| As A Film |
Lost & Lonesome
| “As A Film” is the wonderful debut album by The Bank Holidays, a pop quartet from Perth, Australia. These twelve songs are filled with excellent melodies and very delightfully arranged boy/girl vocal harmonies. With influences from classic popsmiths such as The Zombies and The Beach Boys they have created a beautiful collection of songs with a dynamic song structure, the kind of songs that are direct and catchy at first listen, and then just grow and grow as you’re exploring the layers in the music. There’s quite a lot of similarities to the sixties sunshine pop in The Bank Holidays’ music. It’s simply pop music, and it’s quite complex pop music without showing off. Tracklist: “The Voice I Hear When I'm Alone”, “Oh Daylight”, “This Elated Height”, “Cheating Cheating”, “Folded In Half”, “Consolation Prize”, “First Things First”, “Like A Piano”, “Teaching Pupils”, “Pits & Gravel”, “Tread Easy” and “There Is A Room On Hold”. | BART & FRIENDS |
CD
| Make You Blush |
Lost & Lonesome
| Indiepop purists rejoice! Bart Cummings has reunited with his former Shapiros bandmate Pam Berry and Bart & Friends friend Mark Monnone to help out on this brand new mini album while new friends Louis Richter and Stanley Paulzen drop by to lend a hand. As underground indiepop icons go, Bart is certainly one of Australia’s most enduring and best kept secrets. A founding member of The Cat’s Miaow and later of Hydroplane and Pencil Tin, he has spent two decades warming the hearts of wistful bedsitters the world over. Intimate and conversational in style, Bart’s songs are something of a cross between Yo La Tengo, the Go-Betweens and Felt. And with his inclination for brevity and knack for spinning the most ordinary of situations into something to hold dear, he may also be the pop world’s closest link to Raymond Carver. Over the years, Bart has stayed true this formula; “Make You Blush” heralds his first new recordings since Bart & Friends’ “I Was Lonely ’Til I Found You” mini-album of 2001, and (thankfully, to these ears) he is showing no discernible deviation from the music he was making in the mid-90s: dreamy, jangly and sublime. Tracklist: “A Summer’s Dream”, “Make You Blush”, “These Words Are Too Small”, “Memories Fade”, “Blue Moon”, “Come and See Me”, “Weave Your Name” and “None Of These Things”. Highly recommended! |

| At The National Grid |
Little Teddy
| This is The Bats: the jangly rock band from New Zealand, part of the New Zealand bands that were tagged with the kiwi-rock sound amongst other contemporaries The Clean and The Chills. The Bats have gone on to influence many a band. They even have a greatest hits album! Robert Scott, Malcolm Grant, Paul Kean, Kaye Woodward - 1 line-up; 23 years; 6 albums; 4 world tours and a new album “At The National Grid” on its way. From the band that brought you the legendary albums “Daddy’s Highway” and “Silverbeet” and after ten years something sparks up when The Bats get together to play. From a mantric like pick and strum of a chord from Robert, add bouncing bass with twist from Paul, a melodic hook from Kaye on guitar and Malcolm on a beat that just makes you want to move and dance. The combination of musical ingredients works perfectly - effortlessly. It’s been like that for 23 years now and the magic doesn’t seem to be fading. That is the essence - apply that magic to Robert’s endless creative outpouring of songs and a recent late blooming from the pen of Kaye Woodward and you get a fine new albums worth of tunes from The Bats in 2005. The Bats have spent more than a decade forging a reputation based on their excellent song writing and reliably buoyant pop performances. On record, they often appear as modern day pastoral musicians, revealing the charms of their music and words in gentle pop epiphanies, while their live performances have gathered acclaim for the energy that the group’s insistently strummy rock instills in crowds. Recording all started at “The National Grid”, John Kelcher’s studio in Christchurch, New Zealand where they did the initial session pretty much live to analogue multi track tape. Alastair Gailbraith, who last featured on The Bats “Law Of Things”, has added his distinctive eclectic electric violin to some tracks.Tracklist: “Western Isles”, “Horizon”, “Hubert”, “The Bells Are Ringing”, “Single File”, “Pre War Blues”, “The Rays”, “Things I Can't Leave Behind”, “Mir”, “Up To The Sky”, “We Do Not Kiss The Ones We Kick”, “The Flowers & The Trees” and “Crazy Crowd” |

| ”Simple Machinery” is the second album from Cleveland pop duo of Charlie McArthur and Craig Ramsey, a k a Bears. This album is filled with beautifully arranged songs, striving for the lazy pop perfection, thirteen tracks that capture those summery days and wrap them in a tender soundscape. The excellent songwriting where echoes of both Rocketship, The Lucksmiths and Elliott Smith can be heard is really spiced up with ace vocal harmonies à la sixties sunshine pop, The Beach Boys and The Zombies. Great! Tracklist: “Please Don't”, “Another Tiger Romance”, “Dolphins”, “Wait and See”, “So Go”, “What Makes Me Happy”, “Letting It Go”, “Since I Met You”, “Subtle Way”, “Never Again”, “Your Help”, “Everything I Need” and “Our Time”. |

Slumberland/Fantastic

| Black Tambourine were one of the earliest Slumberland groups, consisting of members of Whorl and Velocity Girl, plus their pal Pam Berry on vocals. Conceived as an explicitly pop band at a time when pop bands were pretty rare in America, Black Tambourine wore their influences on their sleeves: The Jesus & Mary Chain, of course, but also folks like Phil Spector, Smokey Robinson, Love, The Ramones, Shop Assistants, The Pastels, 14 Iced Bears, Orange Juice and the list goes on… Though they only played a handful of gigs in their brief career, their two singles on Slumberland and Audrey’s Diary wielded a large influence, and were key artifacts in the birth of US indie pop. This compilation includes all the songs from both of those singles, plus two cuts from compilations and a previously unheard demo song. Liner notes from Jennifer Silver of Swingset Records round-out this important record – check it out! Tracklist: “For Ex-Lovers Only”, “Black Car”, “Pack You Up”, “Can't Explain”, “I Was Wrong”, “Throw Aggi Off The Bridge”, “Drown”, “We Can't Be Friends”, “By Tomorrow” and “Pam's Tan”. |

| Bricolage |
Slumberland
| The symbiotic relationship between Glasgow and an indefinable, distinct breed of extraordinary pop is a subject of limitless fascination. Virtually from the moment the legendary Orange Juice transformed the once barren Scottish metropolis into a wellspring of tuneful, literate, joyous music, special new bands have continued to flow from its environs. From the early-’80s explosion that begat Altered Images, The Pastels and many others, to latter-day heirs such as Teenage Fanclub, Belle & Sebastian and Franz Ferdinand, the city is as synonymous with the abstract notion of ‘indie’ as Detroit is with the Motown sound or New York with early punk. And now, with the release of their self-titled debut album, Bricolage rightfully take their place as part of Glasgow’s peerless pop lineage. Bricolage – Graham Wann, Wallace Meek, Darren Cameron, and Colin Kearney – formed in late 2005, united by their love of Postcard Records’ evergreen “Sound of Young Scotland” and similarly iconoclastic post-punk heroes including Vic Godard and Fire Engines. In less than two years, the band released three 7-inch singles and toured solidly, sharing stages with the likes of the above-mentioned Godard, a reunited Fire Engines, Franz Ferdinand, even the Sun Ra Arkestra. “Bricolage”, the album, is the realization of those singles’ huge promise. Produced with sparkling economy by former Altered Images guitarist Stephen Lironi, its dozen tracks are the product of its influences, but also a path beyond them. From the swooning romanticism of “Plots Are For Cemeteries”, to the lovesick giddiness of “Turn U Over”, to the Northern Soul-style stomp of “The Waltzers”, this is pop full of melody, verve and wit – for a modern world that is about to discover how badly it needed it. Bricolage may be a new strand in Glasgow’s ongoing musical history, but for Bricolage themselves, this is where their own stunning history truly begins being written. Tracklist: “Bayonets”, ”Flowers Of Deceit”, ”Footsteps”, ”Plots Are For Cemetaries”, ”The Spoilsport’s Retort”, ”Looting Takes The Want Out Of Waiting”, ”A Terrible Souvenir”, ”Turn U Over”, ”6th Form Poet”, ”On The Omnibuses”, ”Sleepwalk To Me” and ”The Waltzers”. |

From 1989 to 1992, the trio of Alison Cousens, Keris Howard and Alex Sharkey recorded four singles for the renowned Sarah Records imprint (previously collected by Matinée on the ‘Singles’ CD in 2003), and a wealth of other songs collected on this new compilation. “Out To Sea” begins with eight tracks that formed the long out of print and highly sought after “Laurel” mini-album released on Sarah. These eight tracks are archetypal of the Brighter sound - melodic, pastoral pop with carefully strummed guitars, keyboards, and wonderfully introspective, poignant vocals from Keris Howard. Also showcasing Brighter’s ability to pen upbeat, jangly pop hits, “Out To Sea” features five early 4-track recordings originally released on limited edition flexidiscs by the German labels Blam-A-Bit and Sturm und Drang. Perhaps more than later recordings, these fan favorites demonstrate the band’s expertise in layering instruments and voice together to form a melodic wall of sound. Among the album’s six unreleased tracks are four songs from a scrapped debut album recorded in 1990. Other songs from this album were later rerecorded for “Laurel” but these four - “There’s Nothing We Can Do”, “Nothing At All”, “Hope To God” and “Amy Never Knew” - were passed over for newer compositions and remained unreleased until today. Additional unreleased gems “If I Could See” and “Wallflower” were recorded at the same time as “Laurel” but dropped from that release and languished in the vaults. They are among the most immediate songs the band ever wrote and, with this release, are likely to become posthumous Brighter classics more than 15 years after their recording. Tracklist: “Christmas”, “Frostbite”, “Summer Becomes Winter”, “Something To Call My Own”, “Ocean Sky”, “Out To Sea”, “Maybe”, “Journey’s End”, “If I Could See”, “Wallflower”, “Airhead”, “Don’t Remember”, “Next Summer”, “Looks Like Rain”, “Falling”, “There’s Nothing We Can Do?”, “Nothing At All”, “Hope To God”, “Amy Never Knew” and “Still”. Highly recommended! |

| BRILLIANT COLORS |
CD
| Introducing |
Slumberland
| Singer/guitarist Jess Scott started Brilliant Colors in early 2007, and she’s been mighty busy since then. After a steady stream of line-up changes, Scott has finally settled on a permanent line-up with the addition of East Coast transplants Diane Anastasio and Michelle Hill (a veteran of a number of Bay Area underground punk outfits, as well as touring guitarist for legendary UK punk / dub group The Slits!), in the meantime sharing bills with fellow Bay Area acts Nodzzz, Grass Widow, and Ty Segall and opening for the likes of The Urinals and The Homosexuals. Following up two sold-out singles (on Make A Mess and Captured Tracks) and mounting fervor from all corners of the pop underground blog-o-world, Brilliant Colors’ debut album drops just in time to secure its place as an undeniable contender for best pop record of 2009. “Introducing”, recorded in Portland, Oregon by Mississippi Records’ Alex Yusimov, marks a great leap forward for Brilliant Colors. The band has honed their songwriting to a fine edge, delivering ten tracks of sharp, subtly catchy indie pop that finds them more assuredly rounding out the corners of their DIY punk-meets-Shop Assistants, ‘78-‘86 pop collision. Opener “I Searched” is a fully formed pop classic that drifts through the speakers on the back a wistful, echoey vocal, while “Absolutely Anything” picks up the pace with a buzzing guitar attack and a chorus hook that would make Joey Ramone proud. The trio is at their best on songs like “Over There” and “Yell In The Air”, tunes that are emblematic of the perfect middle ground that Scott has struck between the crunch and drive of punk and the spiky DIY melodicism of early Rough Trade and Flying Nun bands. “Introducing” is a sharp debut album packed with taut guitar buzz and dreamy melodies, neatly expanding on the promise of those in-demand 7” singles. Clocking in at barely twenty-four minutes, it’s focus and concision is the perfect encapsulation of where we think pop should be in 2009. Side-stepping all of the indie scene pigeonholes, Brilliant Colors have produced a scrappy gem of a record. Tracklist: “I Searched”, “Absolutely Anything”, “English Cities”, “Yell In The Air”, “You Say You Want”, “Over There”, “Mythic”, “Short Sleeves At Night”, “Motherland” and “Should I Tell You”. |

| “Aboa Sleeping” is the excellent debut album by Burning Hearts, the duo of Henry Ojala and Jessika Rapo. Henry and Jessika are so far mostly known from being members in two of the finest pop bands that have ever come out of Finland: Cats On Fire and Le Futur Pompiste. Now you can add Burning Hearts to that collection of lovely bands. The sound of “Aboa Sleeping” is a beautiful and warm meeting of the accoustic and the synthezised, the melodies are all Pop, but with a clear connection to pioneering electronic acts such as Broadcast, Magnetic Fields and Stereolab. With Jessika’s ace vocals floating on top, this album is surely a beautiful little album, ranging from dreamy to euphoric. Tracklist: ”I Lost My Color Vision”, “Iris”, “Various Lives”, “The Galloping Horse”, “We Walked Among the Trees”, “Sea Birds”, “A Peasant’s Dream”, “Close to Her” and “Aboa Sleeping”. | “React Or Die” is the excellent second album from Scottish seven-piece Butcher Boy who makes lovely guitar pop with strings and cello in the vein of early Belle & Sebastian, The Go-Betweens, Tindersticks and The Smiths. This album is, just as the debut, recorded at legendary CaVa Sound in Glasgow. The result is an even richer orchestration and production. Togehter with frontman John Blain Hunt’s excellent songwriting “React Or Die” is just as great as the debut, or maybe even better! | California Snow Story are a Scottish-based band, formed in 2002 by David Skirving. David was a founder member of Glasgow band Camera Obscura. He wrote several songs and played lead guitar on their first three releases (“Park and Ride”, “Your Sound” and “Rare UK Bird”). California Snow Story first released music on the much-loved Shelflife label in 2002 and have had a rather fluid line up. After a lengthy break, David began recording again in 2005 and was joined in 2006 by singer Sandra Belda Martínez. Sandra was previously the vocalist in the highly rated Valencia-based duo Superété. Superété recorded music in Spain in 2001/2002 and played frequently in Valencia and Barcelona in 2003 and 2004. | “The Province Complains”, the debut album by Cats On Fire, is here at last! This Finnish quartet may not need an introduction by now, after two 7” singles on Elva and a CDEP on our own humble label the rumour has been spread around the globe: one of the finest contemporary pop bands comes from Finland. This album is yet another proof of their ability to write classic and intelligent guitar pop songs, where influences can be found in the brittish 80’s indie scene, with bands like The Smiths and Felt, as well as in 60’s pop icons The Kinks. Highly recommended! Tracklist: ”I Am The White-Mantled King”, “Astray”, “Higher Grounds”, “Heat And Romance”, “Born Again Christian”, “The Smell Of An Artist”, “Chain Of Saints”, “Mesmer And Reason”, “If You Must Tell Him”, “The Sharp End Of A Season”, “Draw In The Reins” and “End Of Straight Street”. |

| An excellent 20 track compilation gathering all the songs from Cats On Fire’s two (since long out of print) 7” singles on Elva, the “Draw In The Reins” CDEP on our own Fraction Discs label and “The Hague” from “Matinée Grand Prix”, together with six songs that are previously unreleased (including a cover of White Town’s mega hit “Your Woman”). Anyone who’ve listened and fancied Cats On Fire’s two albums should really give this collection a listen, because this is very much the early history of a Great Pop Band that has hold on to their musical ideas throughout the years - and made fabulous songs from the very start! Tracklist “Your Woman”, “Poor Students Dream Of Marx”, “Never Land Here”, “Crooked Paper Clip”, “Something Happened”, “On His Right Side”, “Don’t Say It Could Be Worse”, “My Friend In A Comfortable Chair”, “You Will Find Me Where You Left Me”, “Solid Work”, “Higher Grounds”, “They Produced A Girl”, “Honey Your Baby”, “The Smell Of An Artist”, “Your Treasure”, “The Cold Hands Of Great Men”, “Draw In The Reins”, “Happiness Is Chemistry”, “Stars” and “The Hague”. |
| “Our Temperance Movement” is the second album from Cats On Fire. And there’s no need talking about the “difficult second album”, because our favourites from Finland have advanced their sound and expression within the regions of what we’re used to hear from them. And why shouldn’t they, because when it comes to jangly guitar pop with smart lyrics, in their game they’re quite unbeatable! Take parts of The Smiths, One Thousand Violins and Happydeadmen, throw in a sparkling Felt guitarist on top, add a warmer, more intimate production and you get the idea... Or maybe like this: Cats On Fire has made another excellent album! How about that!? Tracklist: “Horoscope”, “Lay Down Your Arms”, “Letters From A Voyage To Sweden”, “Never Sell The House”, “The Steady Pace”, “Tears In Your Cup”, “Garden Lights”, “The Borders Of This Land”, “Our Days In The Sun” and “Fabric”. |
| It´s Time! |
Slumberland
| Cause Co-Motion! have spent the last three years releasing a series of increasingly rad singles on What's Yr Rupture?, Cape Shok, Can't Cope and finally Slumberland. Their sound is a blazing chaos of jangle, clatter, and thump - busted strings and broken hearts. Hummable tunes to scratch that TVPs/Pastels/Comet Gain itch, with more than a dash of 14 Iced Bears and Desperate Bicycles in there too. Using reverb as a weapon, Cause Co-Motion! have honed their hyperactive sound into a formidable DIY pop lexicon. Dig their new language. It's Time! is a compilation of these fine singles. The 14 songs race by in barely over 20 minutes, the compressed rush of melody, tunes and crash-bang energy perfectly mirroring the hormonal frenzy of adolescence and young adulthood. Tracklist: “Only Fades Away”, “Baby Don't Do It”, “This Just Won't Last”, “This Time Next Year”, “Take A Look”, “Which Way Is Up?”, “Falling Again”, “Don't You Know?”, “Say What You Feel”, “When Will It Finally End?”, “Who's Gonna Care?”, “I Lie Awake”, “You Don't Say” and “Cry For Attention”. |

Lavender/Music Is My Girlfriend

| Finally it’s here - the anticipated second album from Celestial. The album is filled with beautiful pieces of dreamy pop, jangly guitars, ace melodies and vocals from heaven. We believe this release will be loved by those who appreciate the essence of Creation and Sarah Records, Swedish pop, The Field Mice, Ride, Trembling Blue Stars, My Favorite, Language of Flowers and Camera Obscura. The wonderful vocals on the recordings belong to Malin Dahlberg (Douglas Heart, Laurel Music, We Are Soldiers We Have Guns) and Ulrika Nymark (Northern Fields). While first album “Dream On” draw resemblance to C86, JAMC or a sunkissed Ride the new album shows a band changing towards a slightly cleaner soundscape still cherishing their old 7” singles. “You only dream about yesterdays. There and back again, there and back again…”. Tracklist: “Preston Park”, “Warm Against The Cold”, “Forever Whispers Secrets To Me”, “Love Always Comes To Those Who Waits”, “Crystal Heights”, “How Does It Feel?”, “Lonely Boulevard”, “Try To Understand” and “Hope, You Know”. Flying Nun
| The Clean is a highly influental indie band formed in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1978 and was an early part of the Flying Nun stable of acts (along with The Bats, The Chills, Sneaky Feelings and more). Although they released several chart-topping singles in their native country, the Clean are a little-known cult band outside of New Zealand, although their influence is surprisingly far-reaching. They became a staple of college radio in the 1980s, Stephen Malkmus of Pavement cites them as a major influence, and the band’s droney 80’s output is a direct forerunner of bands such as Yo La Tengo and Camper Van Beethoven. “Unknown Country” was released by Flying Nun in 1996. Tracklist: “Wipe Me, I'm Lucky”, “Champagne & Misery”, “Changing Your Head”, “Balkans”, “Clutch”, “Franz Kafka At The Zoo”, “Whisk”, “Indigo Blue”, “Chumpy”, “Get The Liquid”, “Happy Lil’ Fella”, “Tweezer”, “Rope”, “Twist Top”, “Cooking Water”, “Valley Cab”, “Wall Walk” and “Balkans”. |

Distortion Girl
| After a string of various EP releases over the last couple of years it’s finally time for the debut album by Ulrika Mild, Göteborg’s queen of synthpop, a k a Compute. Anyone familiar with the synthpop sounds and old skool computer game blips from Compute’s past also knows that her songwriting and sound just keep improving and improving with every new release. With this one Compute is taking another leap, the catchiness of the pop melodies is completed by a darker and more distorted sound, bringing to mind elecronic acts such as Virna Lindt, Broadcast and (later) Action Biker. Still, there’s a distinct core of love for the contagious synth pop melodies of the 80’s. This, of course, means that there’s a lot of need for dancing and banging those drums while enjoying This! Tracklist: ”Reminds Me Of You”, “All The Things I Swore I’d Never Be”, “Rushing, Slowing Down”, “All Walk By”, “A Matter Of Patience”, “Over And Over”, “Words”, “Better Ways” and “The Dream”. |

| CRYSTAL STILTS |
CD
| Alight Of Night |
Slumberland
| Following on from their great EP on Woodsist and a summer of packed shows and increasing anticipation is “Alight Of Night”, an album that more than delivers on the promise of their early singles. So what’s it like, you ask? There is a definite flavour of Velvet Underground to be had, but Crystal Stilts’ spectral avant-garage also takes in such far-flung references as: the spooked 60s Texas psych of 13th Floor Elevators and Red Crayola, the gothic blues/punk howl of Gun Club, the dark, experimental DIYism of early Flying Nun/Xpressway groups Pin Group and Plagal Grind, and a post-punk minimalism that brings to mind early Rough Trade and Factory releases. There is definitely a strong pop element as well, with the buzzsaw bubblegum of early Mary Chain b-sides and Meat Whiplash coming to mind. These are all just rough points of reference, though – “Alight Of Night” is far more than just the sum of the bands influences. From the twang ’n’ echo of “Crystal Stilts” to the primal pop stomp of “Prismatic Room” and the lovely jangle of “Shattered Shine”, the band always adds something extra and unique to the mix, whether it’s a fleeting dash of harmonica, a hypnotic organ line or just an amazing guitar sound. There is a unity of purpose at work here, a special mood conjured by the sounds, production and sequence of songs that lifts this album into the realm of the classics, and reveals new twists and turns on each listen. Like all great albums, every piece just sits in exactly the right place, each song builds on the last and by the end you couldn’t imagine changing anything about it at all. Eerily familiar but totally now, “Alight Of Night” is a brilliantly haunting slice of rock primitivism. Tracklist: “The Dazzled”, ”Crystal Stilts”, ”Graveyard Orbit”, ”Prismatic Room”, ”The Sinking”, ”Departure”, ”Shattered Shine”, ”Verdant Gaze”, ”Bright Night”, ”Spiral Transit” and ”The City In The Sea”. |

| Death By Chocolate |
Siesta
| Death By Chocolate is pop as play. A wonderworld where anything is possible and where the only boundaries are those of the imagination. Her remarkable, eclectic, humorous records are a montage of toy psychedelia, surrealism, bubblegum and escapist fantasy. A strange, pleasantly disorientating mosaic of songs and monolgues, where Angela gives typically irresistible beguilingly understated vocal performances. Death By Chocolate - or more especially Angie Tillett - has everything; feminism, tease, espionage, empire, gastronomy, travel, cinema... the fun of commodity. The whole excerise is joyful fancy. The idea that with humour and imagination, anything and everything is possible; a liberating philosophy in the face of which turgid modern, “proper” “serious” so-called pop doesn’t really stand a chance. Her first programme “Death By Chocolate” includes interpretations of “Magpie” the theme to the liberal british seventies tv children’s magazine programme of the same name, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore’s acid parody “The LS Bumble Bee” and “If You Want To Sing Out Sing Out” -a Cat Stevens composition- originally sung as a duet by Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort onscreen in the great 1971 Hal Ashby black comedy “Harold And Maude”. “The Land Of Chocolate”, “A B & C” and “The Salvador Dali Murder Mystery” are charming, funny, precocious essays in pop art, a disarmingly simple and original new approach to modern psychedelia and surrealism. Tracklist: “Mustard Yellow”, “Magpie”, “Sky Blue”, “The Land Of Chocolate”, “Orange”, “My Friend Jack”, “Daddy’s Out Of Focus”, “Olive”, “Ice Cold Lemonade”, “The Is Bumble Bee”, “A B & C”, “Red”, “Rainbow With A Underneath & An Elephant”, “Who Needs Wings To Fly? (From The Flying Nun)”, “The Salvador Dali Murder Mystery”, “If You Want To Sing Out Sing Out”, “Is Bumble Bee (The Bee Is Coming)”. |

Friendly Noise
| The Dreamers are an Anglo/Swedish duo featuring Sarah Nyberg Pergament and Kevin Wright. Sarah has previously recorded as Action Biker and Kevin as Always and Mr Wright (recordings from the last 20 years on labels such as él, Le Grand Magistery and Siesta). Meeting at a Swedish music festival in 2004 the pair began by writing the song “Petit Nuage” in late 2005. Encouraged by this an album began taking shape being recorded mostly in London with Sarah’s vocals being sent from Stockholm and Helsinki. The Dreamers’ influences combine many disparate elements including jazz pop and soundtrack music. Although the music is often melancholic the Dreamers hope to make (to paraphrase Michel Legrand speaking of Tom Jobim) “the sad music that makes the world a better place.” Influences: Stan Tracey, Caetano Veloso, Colleen, Francoise Hardy, Kryzystof Komeda, Matching Mole, Anna Karina, Bill Evans, Monica Zetterlund, Nara Leao, Bernard Herrmann, Nico… Tracklist: “One Day In The Woods”, “Day For Night”, “Petit Nuage”, “Piccadilly Night Bus”, “A Place I Know”, “So Near So Far”, “Michael”, “Out Of This World”, “All Across The City” and “Goodnight Farewell My Friend”. |

| “I Will Be” is the debut full-length by the Dum Dum Girls. Produced by Dee Dee and Richard Gottehrer (Strangeloves, Voidoids, Blondie, The Go-Gos and, more recently, The Raveonettes), “I Will Be” is neither lo-fi nor too polished. Just under thirty minutes with eleven songs, it’s a short tribute to love, fun and the classic pop form of the ’60s girl groups and early punk rockers. Tracklist: “It Only Takes One Night”, “Bhang Bhang, I’m A Burnout”, “Oh Mein M”, “Jail La La”, “Rest Of Our Lives”, “Yours Alone”, “Blank Girl”, “I Will Be”, “Lines Her Eyes”, “Everybody’s Out” and “Baby Don’t Go”. |

| ”Seconds”, the second album from Gothenburg jangle pop masters The Electric Pop Group is finally here! This duo of brothers Erik and Martin Aamot, expanding into a live trio together with Jimmi Thunholm (Tellus About The Moon), is once again showing a remarkable development. Their journey from their first self-titled and self-released album in 2006 via “Sunrise EP” in 2008 and the stunning “My Only Inspiration” to this album is the kind of train trip you want to send every new hopeful indiepop band on. Every new release has overtrumped its predecessor – both musically, lyrically and soundwise! And “Seconds” is their flagship - so far! With ten beautiful and brittle gems picking inspiration from the English 80’s and early 90’s (a time when melancholia and brilliant Rickenbackers were the best of friends) this is a perfect pop album for past, present and future fans of Brighter, Razorcuts, Harper Lee, The Sea Urchins, Another Sunny Day and The Field Mice. Tracklist: “Not By Another”, “Out Of Sight”, “I Know I Will”, “Drawing Lines”, “My Only Inspiration”, “In The Back Of My Mind”, “The Way It Used To Do”, “Into Thin Air”, “We Never Made Up Our Minds” and “The Best Of Times”. Released so late in the year – this gem is a reminder that best of-lists shouldn’t be done earlier than New Years Eve! Highly recommended! | After a couple of sold out CDR’s on Snow Day and Cosy the time has come for the Stockholm quartet Elenette to release their debut album ”Neurosor”, on their own Meta Rekords. This debut album gathers some of their songs from the CDR’s together with a bunch of new songs. The concept of Elenette is still to make intellectual synthpop music with its roots in the Swedish early 80’s synthpop scene, and Lustans Lakejer in particular. Together with the saxophones and the gifted and humorous lyrics in Swedish, the main part about gender issues, Elenette has created their own brilliant Swedish academic pop style! Tracklist: ”Att Göra En Hit”, “Jag Hatar Män”, “Start; Alla Program; Spel”, “Saga”, “Öppet Brev Till Försvarsmakten”, “Kär (Imaginär) Pensionär”, “Musik Att Älska Till”, “Kärlekskomplexet”, “Ge Mig Nåt Att Skylla På”, “Poäng”, “Pain Au Chocolat” and “Som Smuts Under Naglarna”. |

Happy Happy Birthday To Me
| Eux Autres, a Portland-based duo, plays pop music. The band consists of brother and sister Heather and Nicholas Larimer. Heather plays drums, Nicholas plays guitar, and they both sing. Practices frequently devolve into shoving matches. Eux Autres write compact songs with sparse instrumentation. Their music has been unfairly described as “fun.” But while the surface of the songs might seem nonchalant, the lyrics offer skewed observations and fierce barbs. Most of their songs are about a) military history b) being "done wrong" or c) sports. Sadly, Eux Autres are the only people who notice this. The band sounds like the unrequited love song Doug Martsch would have penned for Francoise Hardy, had the time/space continuum conveniently collapsed. This lovely album, released in 2007, is the band’s second album, their first album “Hell Is Eux Autres” was self-released in 2004 and re-released in 2006 by Grenadine. Tracklist: “The Deadball Era”, ”Molly”, ”Gratte-Ciel”, ”When I'm Up”, ”Anne Boleyn”, ”The Town That Never Was”, ”The City All To Himself”, ”Graceful Exit”, ”Collision Theory” and ”Park Bench Vacation”. |

| FITNESS FOREVER |

| Personal Train |
Elefant
| Fitness Forever is a surprising Italian quartet that is making its full-length debut with “Personal Train”, a marvelous pop album that draws together an immense quantity of influences with marvelous taste, the work of musicians who have an extraordinary ability with the fibers of the most precious and elegant pop: from modern points of reference like La Casa Azul (Guille is one of their most unconditional fans), Cinerama, The High Llamas, Richard Hawley, Belle & Sebastian, The Polyphonic Spree or even Le Mans, to other classics like Bacharach, Michel Legrand, The Beach Boys, The Cowsills, The Free Design or Gladys Knight, and last but not least, the Italians: Rita Pavone, Ennio Morricone, Nico Fidenco, Gino Paoli, Piero Umiliani or Mina. All of this comes together in a huge album whose composition (in the style of the songwriters of the sixties, after hours in the studio) kept them locked in the studio for more than a year putting it all together, achieving an album that is full of life, full of grand pop melodies and marvelous arrangements with the utmost care in every detail. It’s one of those albums that each time you listen you discover new shades and sounds, and that introduces us to Carlos Valderrama – a name that we will probably be hearing a lot in the coming years – who is capable of bringing together classic sounds with vision. And as you know, exercise: it’s highly recommendable for the pop spirits. Here you have your personal trainers. Tracklist: ”Intro”, “Probabilmente”, “L’Anarchica Pugliese”, “Vacanze A Settembre”, “Albertone”, “Se Come Te”, “Je Je Jeox”, “Quando Ho Tempo”, “Monica”, “Bacharach”, “Outro” and “D’Estate”. |

| Bite My Tongue |
But Is It Art?
| Swedish electro pop group Friday Bridge started their work on “Bite My Tongue” a late night in spring at the Hotel am Holstenwall in Hamburg. In front of them for inspiration: an issue of Financial Times and Heat Magazine. When asked to describe the album, the band call it “beautiful and a little troubling, crazy and infectiously poppy at the same time”. It seems like a proper statement for a band that has been compared to acts as diverse as Kylie, Kate Bush – and “Cut Copy sung by Lykke Li”. The production of Bite My Tongue incorporates everything from anvils and studio door handles to Sturm und Drang strings. Very modern, and very original pop music.Like the debut, “Bite My Tongue” embodies headstrong lyrics that treat as different topics as spiritualism (“Horror of Horrors”) and skyscrapers (“There’s No Doubt [You’d Get Killed]”). The Financial Times inspiration shines through in “How To Spend It”, a title that in these times of financial crisis has come to sound cheerfully provocative. Friday Bridge is Ylva Lindberg and Niklas Gustafsson. Bite My Tongue is their second album, after the critical acclaimed and Swedish National Radio Award nominee “Intricacy” (2007). Tracklist: “How To Spend It”, “Horror Of Horrors”, “Shanghai Shipping”, “This Case Is Closed”, “Shock Value”, “Tourner La Page”, “Cats And Dogs”, “Krautrock”, “Partners In Crime”, “The Centre Of Attention”, “There’s No Doubt (You’d Get Killed)”, “Once You’ve Said Goodbye” and “Bridgend”. |

| “Intricacy” is the eagerly awaited debut album from Ylva Lindberg, better known as Friday Bridge. Intricacy features 13 songs, including the hit song “It Song” and a special guest appearance from Dickon Edwards (Fosca) on “Pigeon”. A great debut album with its own trademarked sound - full of dreamy and beautiful, sophisticated but yet cynical songs. | Gigi is the recording project of Vancouver-based songwriter Nick Krgovich and producer/engineer Colin Stewart. In addition to Stewart’s engineering and production credits on albums by Black Mountain, Cave Singers and Destroyer, as well as, Krgovich’s other groups No Kids and P:ano, Gigi has given the pair an opportunity to unabashedly profess their love of pop music in the most direct way conceivable, and this could not have been accomplished without the talents of the many players and singers that graciously helped out along the way. With singing contributions from artists such as Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy, Mirah, Zac Pennington of Parenthetical Girls, Katie Eastburn of Young People, Rose Melberg and Karl Blau, the character studies in the songs are voiced from wildly distinct positions giving the narratives of lovesick loneliness, solitary walks around the neighbourhood at twilight, and Friday nights at home with parents watching television in the front room, just that much more poignancy. In the end, what began as a humble experiment four years ago has ballooned into a pop extravaganza that will sit just as comfortably next to your “Back To Mono” box set as it will your rotary phone, waiting to ring. Capturing the spirit of the pop music that flooded the hit parade in the early 60’s is a tall order, and the songs on “Maintenant” decidedly develop a world and language of its own. With a reverent eye on the past and a deep respect for the airtight songsmithery of artists like Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry and Shadow Morton (among countless others), the songs aren’t content to be throwback-y pastiches or polka-dotted retro workouts but rather stand as attempts at working within a specific and incredibly rich tradition of pop music production. Tracklist: “No, My Heart Will Go On” (Chorus), “The Hundredth Time” (Duffy Driediger & Ryan Peters), “Dreams Of Romance” (Zac Pennington), “Alone At The Pier” (Rose Melberg), “One Woman Show” (Joey Cook), “I’m Not Coming Out Tonight” (Sydney Vermon & Marissa Johnson), “Some Second Best” (Chorus), “I Can’t Bring Myself To Smile” (Bobby Birdman & Katy Davidson), “The Old Graveyard” (Karl Blau), “The Marquee” (Katie Eastburn), “Impossible Love” (Chorus), “Everyone Can Tell” (Ryan Beattie), “Someone Tell Me Please” (Mirah), “I’ll Quit Calypso” (Owen Pallett) and “Neathe The Streetlights” (Nick Krgovich). Highly recommended! |

| GIRLS AT OUR BEST! |
CD

Cherry Red
| Girls At Our Best were one of the finest, most life-affirming of a new breed of independent bands who cropped up at the turn of the 80s – long-standing fan John Peel once referred to them as one of the few groups that made the period bearable. Formed in Leeds from the ashes of legendary original punk band SOS, the group were fronted by distinctive female vocalist Jude ‘Jo’ Evans, forming a songwriting team with guitarist James Alan and bass player Gerard Swift after they met at art college. All four of their singles for their own Record Records, Rough Trade and Happy Birthday Records are included here as bonus tracks – including the wonderful “Getting Nowhere Fast” (later covered by The Wedding Present), its coruscating b-side “Warm Girls”, “Politics!”, “Go For Gold” and “Fast Boyfriends”. Also included is a previously unreleased session for BBC DJ Richard Skinner. As a final bonus, there’s also a completely unheard, virgin demo from the band’s very final recording session. All tracks have been digitally re-mastered from source tapes where possible. Tracklist: “Getting Nowhere Fast”, “Warm Girls”, “Politics!”, “It’s Fashion”, “Go For Gold”, “Pleasure”, “Too Big For Your Boots”, “I’m Beautiful Now”, “Waterbed Babies”, “Fun-City Teenagers”, “£600,000”, “Heaven”, “China Blue”, “Fast Boyfriends”, “She Flipped”, “Goodbye To That Jazz” “This Train”, “Fast Boyfriend” (BBC Session), “£600,000” (BBC Session), “I’m Beautiful Now”(BBC Session), “Pleasure” (BBC Session) and “Boys At Their Best!” (demo). Highly recommended! |

| Goblin Universe released a pair of great records during their brief lifetime in 2000/2001: a rare self-released CDR and a 7” co-released between their own Grande Barbe label and the Rocket Number Nine label. This disc collects both of those, and adds an extra compilation track and two previously unreleased ones, as well! Recommended for fans of the lackadaisical days of Pavement and the sheer noise/fuzz of Tall Dwarfs. Note: you may recognize Sam from his solo band, The State Of Samuel... Tracklist: “No Love”, “Comet”, “Wet Lips”, “Here Comes Gnome”, “Making Waves”, “Saving The Paste”, “Hands”, “Doing Time”, “Sing For The Soul”, “Don’t Carry On”, “For The Dinosaur Bones”, “Hallelujah!”, “Chinese/Midgets” and “True To Nothing”. |

| Fabulous third album by English duo Harper Lee, consisting of Keris Howard (formerly in Brighter and Hal) and Laura Bridge. Beautifully layered guitars and keyboards, songs of melancholia and some upbeat poppier songs too. Anyone who’ve listened to and enjoyed Howard’s Brighter songs will certainly not be dissapointed with “All Things Can Be Mended”. Classic stuff! |

| Highly anticipated debut album from celebrated new Glasgow band The Hermit Crabs! The band's “Feel Good Factor” EP turned lots of heads upon its release early this year, with Tangents calling it “sweet succinct pop that snaps and crackles in all the right places”, Aversion.com describing it as “a dose of California sunshine filtered through Scottish bedroom-pop sensibilities”, and All Music Guide heralding it as “classic Scottish indie pop”. Following release of the EP, the band expanded to a five-piece with the addition of a full time violinist and percussionist and focused on live performances before completing the recordings for this magnificent debut album. Rich with instrumentation and recorded with notable guest musicians including members of Teenage Fanclub and Camera Obscura, “Saw You Dancing” is one of those classic debut albums that impresses right from the start. A remarkable debut album from new Scottish pop favorites, ”Saw You Dancing” is another dazzling success for Matinée! Tracklist: “Tonight”, “Goodbye My Friend”, “Closet Fan”, “Lean Free Summer”, “Bad Timing”, “Friends Folk Festival”, “Secrets And Lies”, “Feel Good Factor”, “Third Time Lucky” and “Soulmate”. |

| The Honeydrips (Mikael Carlsson of Dorotea fame) debut album is finally here, after releasing a bunch of CDR’s, a 7” single and some mp3 only’s. A lovely blend of jangly guitar pop à la Felt, dancey pop à la Saint Etienne and 60’s pop arrangements – with an emphasis on Mikael Carlsson’s beautiful voice and talent for writing romantic pop songs makes this to a very fine debut. With guest appearances from Sarah Nyberg Pergament (Action Biker, The Dreamers), Patrik Lindgren (Hormones In Abundance, Ring Snuten!) and Hanna Fahl (Kissing Mirrors). Tracklist: “The Strangest Dream (Pt 1 & 2)”, “Trying Something New”, “Fall From A Height”, “(Lack Of) Love Will Tear Us Apart”, “I Wouldn't Know What To Do”, “Wait For The Grief To Come”, “The Walk”, “Here Comes The Future”, “It Was A Sunny Summer Day” and “In Some Distant Future”. |

| Hunky Dory were an authentic children’s group from Lewes, England that were signed to Él records in 1988 and seen by founder Mike Alway as the logical next step after Bad Dream Fancy Dress and Would-Be-Goods. Unfortunately this coincided with Cherry Red’s decision to put an end to the Él label, and the album wasn’t released until 2002. This is pure Pop melodies with lovely vocal arrangements. Together with a charm and naivety that brings sunshine pop family group The Cowsills to mind, this is indeed another Él classic! Tracklist: “On The Loose”, “Over The Rainbow”, “It's Love”, “We're Through”, “Another Christmas Day”, “Noisy Fun Famous”, “I Don't Believe It”, “Russians”, “We've Got Each Other”, “Gabriel The Angel”, “Dreamland Express”, “Can't You See” and “Tomorrow”. |

| Produced by ‘90s orchestral-pop mainstay Kurt Ralske, formerly of Ultra Vivid Scene, the debut album from New York pop sophisticates Ivy combines the Gallic cool of French-born chanteuse Dominique Durand with the varied melodic smarts of Andy Chase and Adam Schlesinger (the latter split his time between this trio and his own band, Fountains of Wayne). Mixing echoes of ‘60s French pop singers like Francoise Hardy with a light bossa nova influence and strong influences from mid-‘80s UK guitar pop bands of the Prefab Sprout/Lloyd Cole/The Smiths variety, “Realistic” is far more than the sum of its influences. |
| The June Brides were from South London and had considerable success in the Independent Charts in the mid 1980's. The band was built around lyricist, guitarist and vocalist Phil Wilson. Their album, “There Are Eight Million Stories” was No 1 for four weeks in the Independent Chart in September 1985 and stayed in that chart for a total of 38 weeks. This is a double album which contains all The June Brides tracks ever recorded including the BBC Radio 1 sessions with John Peel and Janice Long, plus the solo work from Phil Wilson which followed the break up of the band. This definitive double album 41 track package includes very detailed sleevenotes (6 000 words), rare pictures and complete discography. | KATSEN |
CD
| It Hertz! |
Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation
| Katsen are the electronic pop duo of Chris Blackburn & Donna Grimaldi. Donna and Chris became friends in 2001 while selling clothes at a craft market in Brighton. Donna’s brilliant mixtapes, with their bold collage covers, caught Chris’ attention and fired his imagination. For for the first time, after playing two-fingered synth in various bands, he’d met someone with the tastes and talents to compliment his own. Chris: “We’d get together to listen to records and, after exhausting Donna’s extensive and very cool collection, we’d get out my synths and toy keyboards and create our own sound long into the happy night.” Interrupted only by Donna running away one summer to join the circus, and Chris teaching acting to ballet dancers, Katsen songs began to form, taking cues from 50s chic, 70s krautrock and the sharper edges of 80s pop. Following on from cameo appearances in compilations such as “Bot POP” (Happy Robots) and “Electronically Yours Vol.1” (Undo/ EMI), “It Hertz!” is the full-length offspring of Katsen’s eight-year partnership; the love of the square wave and all things Casio. Tracklist: “Let’s Build A City”, “Chequered Flag”, “Cactus”, “I’m A Doctor”, “Island In An Island”, “What You Want”, “Drax”, “German Film Star”, “It Hertz!”, “Constellation”, “Where Nobody Can Find Us” and “Florian”. |

| “Mats Jorgensen and Hedda Fredly jigsawed these sounds together in their kitchen” says the liner notes to the Norwegian duo Kawaii's debut album. And it’s a truly nice puzzle of pop sensibility, synth pop, electro beats and jazzy guitar pop. Elements that will appeal to fans of Pipas, Figurine or The Postal Service, but there are also enough elements of originality in these 13 tracks to form a fanbase of their own; bossanova tunes, toy keyboards, xylophones, vocal harmonies, video game noises and elegantly weird but beautiful melodies. |

| Survival Strategies In A Modern World |
Fraction Discs
| Liechtenstein is about to become the band that every indie kid’s younger sister wishes she had started. Making a splash on the international indie pop scene with two attentiongrabbing singles, 2007’s “Stalking Skills” and last year’s “Apathy”, the Swedish trio of Renée, Naemi, and Elin will make waves with their unique take on the girl-group post-punk sound of early ’80s groups like The Au Pairs and Kleenex. Fraction Discs is thrilled to team up with the excellent US label, Slumberland, to bring their subversive pop to a larger audience in the form of their new mini-LP, “Survival Strategies In A Modern World”. With the nine-song “Survival Strategies In A Modern World”, Liechtenstein not only delivers the spooky harmonies and loping basslines that earned their singles such critical attention, but they also stretch out into realms only hinted at before. The band not only gives Love Is All a run for their money in the Swedish post-punk revival department, but they can also fit right in alongside Slumberland labelmates The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (not to mention “lost” bands of the C-86 era like Swiss buzzsaw-pop girl-group Chin Chin) in delivering manic pop thrills. Clocking in alongside the post-punk flavour of lead track “All At Once” and “White Dress”, for example, comes the bubblegum sugar rush of “Roses In The Park.” Liechtenstein also has more than angular post-punk tricks up their sleeve; they channel the naïve-yet-proper Oxford charm of Talulah Gosh or The Carousel on songs like “Postcard” and “The End”. Mixing its ’80s influences with a very fresh and contemporary enthusiasm, “Survival Strategies In A Modern World” packs so much excitement into less than 23 minutes that you will discover a new favorite song with every spin. At least, that is, until your sister sneaks into your room, snatches it (along with your Vivian Girls records and rare Mo-Dettes singles), and takes her own shot at indie stardom. Better buy two.. Tracklist: “All At Once”, “Postcard”, “Sophistication”, “By Staying Here (We Will Slowly Disappear)”, “Wallpaper Stripes”, “Roses In The Park”, “Reflections”, “White Dress” and “The End”. |

| Two Thousand And Ten Injuries |
Polyvinyl
| “Two Thousand And Ten Injuries” is an eclectic collection of pop melodies, anchored by New Wave and punk rock rhythms, that are as refined as they are unpredictable. Highlights of the 12 track set include the art punk urgency of “Bigger, Bolder”, the lilting pop of “Never Now”, the Slits-like reggae of “False Pretense” and the classic New Wave rallying cry found in “Dust”. “Two Thousand And Ten Injuries” was produced, recorded and mixed at the band’s home studio, Bananaflux, during the summer of 2009 by Love Is All and Wyatt Cusick (The Aislers Set, Trackstar). All told, “Two Thousand And Ten Injuries” successfully manages to be Love Is All’s most adventurous, and dare we say, accessible, album yet. Tracklist: “Bigger Bolder”, “Repetition”, “Never Now”, “Less Than Thrilled”, “Early Warnings”, “False Pretense”, “The Birds Were Singing With All Their Might”, “Again, Again”, “Kungen”, “A Side In A Bed”, “Dust” and “Take Your Time”. |

| A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night |
What´s Your Rupture?
| From seemingly out of nowhere, Love is All turned up everywhere after their release of “Nine Times That Same Song” and then, impossibly, disappeared to the fate of hype, broken promises and seething expectations. A full three years later, the fanciful-anachro-charm of Love Is All has matured with the marriage of several members, kids and a true appreciate that love is all. The new album harnesses the same raw energy and music which captured our hearts, but this time magnifies it through the complex emotions and experiences the band has struggled with. The recording of “A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night” reveals the unsatisfying realities of success. Years in the works, “A Hundred Things...” is a record about excitement, frustration, regret, disappointment and figuring out what’s important in finding the relief of the morning’s light at the end of a bad nights sleep. Tracklist: “New Beginnings”, “Give It Back”, “Movie Romance”, “Last Choice”, “Sea Sick”, “Wishing Well”, “When Giants Fall”, “Rumors”, “Big Bangs, Black Holes, Meteorites”, “A More Uncertain Future” and “19 Floors”. |

| Not Here Not Now |
Clairecords
| The debut album from Dresden band Malory, completely remastered and including two bonus tracks (one of them hidden/unlisted), originally released on German label Alison in 2000. Malory craft their beautiful, blissful sonic sound with brilliant sheets of effected guitars, drawing comparisons to the unmistakable gorgeous guitar work of Slowdive. Although the band implement the classic shoegaze-band instrumentation lineup - three guitarists, male & female vocals, drums, and bass - they definitely do not fall into the trap of countless other "ripoff" bands, but rather expand on these gorgeous sounds to create some of the most lush dreampop soundscapes in what seems like eons. Their monumental orchestral-shoegaze opuses and ethereal vocals have drawn comparisons to Slowdive, Spiritualized, Lush, My Bloody Valentine, Curve, Chapterhouse, et al. Tracklist: “Falling”, “Spring”, “Underwater”, “Dany”, “Just Be”, “Beauty”, “Sunday Night”, “Words” and “Worry About Something”. |

| “Burnt Out Landscapes” is a 27 track compilation CD which gathers together all of The Manhattan Love Suicides recordings from their 4 limited edition singles, plus totally remastered U.S radio session tracks, a handful of recordings which have up to now only been available on vinyl or hard to find compilations and finally, 4 brand new tracks not available elsewhere. An absolutely essential collection if you love the sounds of The Jesus And Mary Chain, early My Bloody Valentine, 1960’s Girls In The Garage compilations, lo fi fuzzed out female fronted noise pop played at maximum volume and delivered with no frills but a truckload of attitude. Tracklist: “Jonny Boy”, “Clusterfuck”, “Cracked Open”, “Sycamore Peripheral”, “Detroit Diesel”, “Keep It Coming”, “You’ll Never Get That Guy (WOXY live radio session)”, “Extra Medication”, “Head Over Heels”, “Kick It Back (7” version)”, “Autumn Fades In”, “Orphans”, “Never Far From You”, “Suzy Jones (WOXY live radio session)”, “Way Out Of Reach”, “Heat And Panic”, “Last Stand”, “(The Guy On The) 14th Floor (WOXY live radio session)”, “Burning Wire”, “Dazzle The Blind”, “You’ll Never Get That Guy”, “Thinking Is Killing Me (7” version)”, “Things You’ve Never Done (WOXY live radio session)”, “Wolves”, “Sitting Target”, “Finding The End Of The Line (with Random Number)” and “Life In Vain”. |

Magic Marker
| The Manhattan Love Suicides perform gigs that never last over 15 minutes and are drowned in waves of blistering feedback and guitar noise, but this album proves to anyone who has seen them and doubted their songwriting ability that they can produce the catchiest of pop tunes reminiscent of The Shop Assistants, The Jesus And Mary Chain, The Rosehips and The Fizzbombs with a bit of Sonic Youth, The Velvet Underground, Galaxie 500 and My Bloody Valentine thrown in too. So, if you don't automatically think of a shit nightclub when you hear the word Creation, or a girls name when you hear Sarah, or a sandwich shop when someone says Subway, and you actually know what the fuck we're talking about here... then you need to get yourself a copy of this. Tracklist: “Things You've Never Done”, ”Skulls”, ”Evil Side”, ”Crush Whatever”, ”Thinking Is Killing Me”, ”(The Guy On The) 14th Floor”, ”Home”, ”Suzy Jones”, ”Kick It Back”, ”Negative Push”, ”Indian Summer” and “Providence”. |

Matinée
| Highly anticipated debut album from indie darlings Math and Physics Club! The world fell in love with this Seattle band as soon as its debut “Weekends Away” was released in 2005. The EP sold out of its initial pressing in just a few months and has now earned the distinction as the best selling single on Matinée. The follow-up “Movie Ending Romance” was released later that year to worldwide acclaim and proved the success of the debut was no happy accident. The band spent the past year writing and recording its debut album and the results are truly spectacular. The self-titled album features ten highly melodic songs about relationships and heartbreak. From the first moment of the opening track you know you're in for a treat and it doesn't let up until the final note some 30 minutes later. If you’re into melodic and jangly pop acts such as The Lucksmiths, The Fairways, Belle & Sebastian, The Housemartins, The Smiths, The Softies or Acid House Kings you’ve got a friend in Math And Physics Club. A lovely debut album! Tracklist: “Darling, Please Come Home”, ”I Know What I Want”, ”April Showers”, ”Holidays And Saturdays”, ”La La La Lisa”, ”Look At Us Now”, ”You'll Miss Me”, ”Cold As Minnesota”, ”Such A Simple Plan” and ”Last Dance”. |

Kevin McGrother
| ”Living In An Enid Blyton World” is the fab debut album by British pop elegant Kevin McGrother. It all started back in the early 90’s with Just Like Alice, who later became Tickety-Boo, gigging around the pubs of North East England until Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and his publishers found something in Tickety-Boo’s “Cantona” and called the laywers... “’They fought the lord, the lord won’ and the band crumbled away” as Kevin McGrother puts it. Now, ten years later, Kevin McGrother has collected his old songs and put together this lovely album filled with intelligent and funny lyrics. With songs ranging from jangly and catchy pop songs in an English 80’s pop tradition to some songs accompanied by only piano or accoustic guitar Kevin McGrother has created a varied album where the great songwriting is in focus. For fans of The Hit Parade, Another Sunny Day, The Housemartins ...and English 80’s indiepop in general. Tracklist: ”I'm Glad I'm Not Like You”, ”Haircut of the Century”, “A Week Of Wednesdays”, “Stephen”, “Living In An Enid Blyton World”, “Summer Starts On Sunday”, “Turn Your Life Around”, “The Night I Met Tracey Emin”, “The Same Old Story” and “You'll Never Know”. |

| Formed by guitarist/singer Cath Carroll with drummer Chris Fenner and bassist Steve Macguire in 1984, the group Miaow released its debut “Belle Vue” EP the following year, and in 1986 contributed to the celebrated C86 compilation. Alerted to their talents, Tony Wilson brought the group to Factory Records, which lead to the release of two unabashed pop singles in 1987: “When It All Comes Down” and “Break The Code”. Miaow also recorded two Peel Sessions, and left behind demos for an aborted Factory album. This definitive CD collection rounds up all their studio recordings ie: “Belle Vue”, “Fate”, “Grocer's Devil Daughter”, “Sport Most Royal”, “Did She?”, “Following Through”, “Three Quarters Of The Way To Paradise”, “Coockery Casualty”, “When It All Comes Down”, “Did She?”, “When It All Comes Down (12")“, “Just Keep Walking”, “Thames At High Water”, “The Dreamer's Death”, “Fate”, “Break The Code”, “Stolen Ears”, “Fear Of The Sun (Demo)”, “Carnal Drag (Demo)” and “King Creole”. |

Cherry Red
| “The Story So Far” is actually the first ever CD release by Mo-Dettes, an all-girl post punk/new wave/pop band that somehow has fallen into obscurity. Hopefully this Cherry Red reissue can put an end to that. This CD contains their only album (originally released in 1980) accompanied by five bonus tracks taken from their singles, including the classic single version of “White Mice”. Mo-Dettes is often compared to contemporary bands like The Slits and The Raincoats, which is partly deceptive because Mo-Dettes were a lot more pop-ish than those bands. Tracklist: “Fandango”, “Satisfy”, “Dark Park Creeping”, “The Kray Twins”, “Paint It Black”, “White Mouse Disco”, “Bedtime Stories./ Masochistic Opposite”, “Foolish Girl”, “Norman (He's No Rebel)”, “Sparrow”, “Milord”, “Bitta Truth”, “Two Can Play”, “Tonight”, “Waltz In Blue Mirror” and “White Mice”. |

From the early years of jangly guitar pop, sometimes compared to Felt, to the guitar pop/dance/electro merge on their last two albums there’s a striking amount of elegant pop melodies waiting to be discovered. And now there’s a fourth album to add, and a truly great album too. The dancey side from their third album “Striving For The Lazy Perfection” is absent, these songs are more of a journey back to The Orchids’ roots in guitar pop - but now in a slightly more mellow way. “Good To Be A Stranger” proves that The Orchids have an excellent talent for writing intelligent pop music. Welcome back! Tracklist: “Good To Be A Stranger”, “Take My Hand”, “Xylophone Song”, “I Need You To Believe In Me”, “The Last Thing (On Your Mind)”, “Another Saturday Night”, “Down To The Ocean”, “Feel The Magic”, “Do It For Yourself” and “You Could Do Something To Me”. |

| Longshot For Your Love |
Marina
| Excellent compilation of rare and unheard tracks by the influential Liverpool band The Pale Fountains. “Longshot For Your Love” was released by German label Marina in 1998 and is a brilliant combination of early recordings released on Les Disques Du Crepuscule in 1982, and BBC Radio session tracks including songs from a Peel Session. This CD very much uncovers the period between The Pale Fountains’ debut single on Operation Twilight 1982 and the debut album “Pacific Street” on Virgin 1984. It’s a great starting point for discovering the well-crafted and shimmering melodies Michael Head penned in the 80’s, with influences from 60’s icons like Love, Sergio Mendes and Bacharach/David. Perfect for fans of aforementioned acts, Aztec Camera, Orange Juice, Dislocation Dance and Cocoanut Groove. Tracklist: “Just A Girl”, “(There's Always) Something On My Mind”, “Lavinia's Dream”, “Longshot For Your Love”, “Thank You”, “The Norfolk Broads”, “Benoit's Christmas”, “Hey There Fred”, “Palm Of My Hand”, “Free”, “We Have All The Time In The World”, “Just A Girl” and “Love Situation”. Highly recommended! |

| Alison Statton |
Soft Abuse

| Pants Yell! is a group of three young men that hail from the red brick sidewalks of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Andrew Churchman and Sterling Bryant formed the band three years ago within the walls of a Boston art school, and have since released albums and singles aimed at the hearts of an international group of journal writers, unrequited lovers, liberal arts majors, and romantic adolescent daydreamers. Now with new drummer Casey Keenan from Major Stars, Pants Yell! have shifted into a more confident, expansive form of chiming pop music. The album title Alison Statton pays homage to the lovely young Welsh girl who fronted Young Marble Giants and Weekend. The songs pay homage to failed relationships and the uncertainty of youth via a batch of intelligently informed compositions; where female vocals float through as trumpets and saxophones spurt lost Stax lines, a glockenspiel chimes, guitars feedback, drums flail and a young man sings sweetly about all the things young men should sing sweetly about. Alison Statton confirms Andrew Churchman’s position as top-notch modern songwriter. His words and themes flirt as much with the films of Truffaut as they do with Jonathan Richman’s earnestness and the Go-Betweens’ golden days of mellifluous pop truisms. All in all, Alison Statton is modern pop music at its best. Tracklist: ”More Purple”, “Reject, Reject”, “Tried To Be Good”, “Evan's Way”, “A New City Life”, “Magenta And Green”, “Shoreham Kent”, “Alison Statton”, “The Royal We”, “For Dee” and “Two French Sisters”. Highly recommended! |

| Life, you will have observed, is not a series of epic epiphanies and seismic milestones, but a succession of quiet weeks and months, interrupted at rare intervals – if you’re lucky – by fleeting moments of significance or grace: a new crush, a break-up, the discovery of a particularly good book or song or film, an intense conversation with a friend that you know you won’t forget. Some of the best pop bands of the past several decades have made it their mission to evoke, in their words and in their music, the understated beauty of everyday living. Think of the Go-Betweens, who found boundless romantic possibility in going for a walk or spending the night in; or Belle and Sebastian’s hushed remembrances of little failures and lessons learned, and sympathetic portraits of young misfits struggling to make sense of the world. Pants Yell!, despite their misleadingly emphatic (and eternally mysterious) name, belong to this crucial lineage. Together since 2003, when they formed at a Boston art school, the trio is the vehicle for singer-guitarist Andrew Churchman’s modestly proportioned but perfectly realized songs. Abetted by co-founding bassist Sterling Bryant and drummer Casey Keenan (who joined in 2007), his two- and three-minute marvels draw power from restraint and poetry from plainspoken observation – in short, they are greater than the sum of their parts. Not for nothing did he name the band’s last album “Alison Statton”, in honor of the former Young Marble Giants/Weekend singer, who understood better than most that a whisper, dispensed properly, is always more affecting than a scream. “Alison Statton”, the third Pants Yell! album, brought the band unprecedented critical and popular success internationally. And now they’ve come to rest at their spiritual home, Slumberland Records, with its remarkable follow-up, “Received Pronunciation”. In nine songs and 26 minutes, and without ever deploying a distortion pedal, they make a greater emotional impact than an album twice as long and at double the volume. Which isn’t to say the album lacks for visceral sonic thrills – hear “Someone Loves You” build to an ecstatic climax that perfectly justifies the song’s title, or the elegant guitar solo that launches “Cold Hands” skyward. This is pop that doesn’t need to raise its voice or shake its fist; it wins you with its mind and its heart. Tracklist: “Frank And Sandy”, “Rue De La Paix”, “Cold Hands”, “Got To Stop”, “Spider”, “Someone Loves You”, “Marble Staircase”, “Not Wrong” and “To Take”. Highly recommended! |

| Second album from London-based international pop duo Pipas. Successfully combining harmonic indiepop with dance music, band members Mark Powell (ex-Bella Vista and Moonlings) and Spanish native Lupe Nunez-Fernandez team up with an ingeniously programmed drum machine to create infectious popsongs which manage to be both unpretentiously simple and naturally sophisticated. "A Cat Escaped" is a tantalizing treat of modern sounds and guitars that jangle in all the right places, with short, sweet songs and breezy vocals featuring plenty of ba-ba-ba's. Tracklist: “What Nobody Does”, “The Conversation”, “Barbapapa”, “Rock And/Or Roll”, “Old Kent Road”, “The Witches”, “Cruel And Unusual”, “A Cat Escaped”, “Emblematic” And “Run Run Run”. |

Slumberland
| Since their formation by Crayola in 2003, Sarandon have marked themselves as a potent group of post-punk tacticians on a mission to save indie from wetness, knee-jerk twee posturing and careless cardigan wearing. Taking their cues from the rough angularity beloved by bands on labels like Ron Johnson and Slampt, Sarandon are the proud parents of a string of five 7" EPs (and one compilation thereof) fairly bursting with short, sharp tunes, wiry riff-mad guitars, spastic drumming and terse-yet-clever lyrics. Trimming all musical and lyrical fat, Sarandon cram more ideas and passion into 1:30 than many bands do across a whole record. Some points of comparison that spring to mind include Big Flame, The Minutemen, Boghsed, Fire Engines and The Fall, and though Sarandon share some musical DNA with those groups they've also forged their own path and unique sound. Crayola has a notable (and widely-noted) talent for somehow managing to marry naggingly catchy tunes to corruscating blasts of guitar mayhem, combining the punchy, driving tunes with surprisingly memorable melodies and smart lyrics. It's pop, but possibly the angriest and most aggressive pop you've heard. As we enter 2008, Sarandon have settled on a line-up consisting of Crayola, Tom Greenhalgh on drums and ex-Big Flame/Great Leap Forwar | | |
