| This lovely two track single from Philippine pop quintet, co-released by Japanese label Apple Crumble and Philippine label Dorothy, is pure happy-go-lucky, rich orchestrated pop with some 60’s thrown in. When a band states Eggstone, Holiday, Dislocation Dance, The Pale Fountains and The Housemartins as their influences you know they’re aiming for pop perfection and the result is delicious. A bit like a mix of Holiday’s “Ready, Steady, Go!” and Seashells “Looking After Your Flowers” (two sadly forgotten albums!). Tracklist: “Lorraine” and “Moonstruck”. |

| Don´t You Rise |
Slumberland
| The Bats are legends of New Zealand music, standing tall alongside contemporaries The Clean and The Chills as linchpins of the Flying Nun label and the Dunedin/Christchurch scene. Over the course of 25 years, 7 albums and 4 world tours, the original line-up of Robert Scott, Malcolm Grant, Paul Kean and Kaye Woodward remains intact and still creating vital pastoral pop gems. Combining Robert’s mantric-like guitar pick and strum, bouncing bass with a twist from Paul, melodic hooks from Kaye on guitar and Malcolm’s snappy beats, the combination of musical ingredients works perfectly - effortlessly. The band’s reputation is sterling; based on legendary albums like Daddy’s Highway and Silverbeet and their energetic live shows, The Bats have an enthusiastic world-wide fanbase who treasure the band’s continued excellence. The “Don’t You Rise” EP gathers up four tunes from 1998 and 2003, helping to complete the discographical picture leading up to the release of their current album, “The Guilty Office”. Featuring the electric violin on Alastair Galbraith (who last featured on The Bats’ “Law Of Things”), “That’s How You Found Me” would fit in perfectly on any classic Bats album and mesmerized with its folk-pop groove. “You Don’t Belong” is a moody gem, while “Don’t You Rise”’s country-inflected strum is a live favorite. “Face Inside The Sun” rounds out the record in fine form, a mid-tempo sing-along that sounds straight off of “Daddy’s Highway”. A pretty special EP then, and ample evidence that 25 years after forming, The Bats still earn their legendary status. Tracklist: “That’s How You Found Me”, “You Don’t Belong Here”, “Don’t You Rise” and “Face Inside The Sun”. |

On this single The Bon Bon Club hit us with a Hulk-fist sized triple whammy (plus!) of cover versions. Rather than slow the songs down on acoustic guitar to ”show the great songwriting” like every Jo Wiley Live Lounge indie plodder, the Bon Bons strip ’em down and rip ’em up to the real essentials: the bass and drums. |
| Bricolage started playing live in some of Glasgow’s seamier environs at the tail-end of 2005, perfecting their louche and stylish Postcard/Vic Godard-influenced uplifting pop over the early months of 2006. By the summer of 2006, the band had played live with an eclectic array of artists and released their very well-received debut single, “Footsteps”, on esteemed Lanarkshire subversive pop label Creeping Bent. “Turn U Over” is taken from Bricolage's eponymous debut album to be released on Slumberland in February 2009. It's a fresh and brilliant slice of modern pop that simultaneously recalls the Sound of Young Scotland thrills of Orange Juice and a more classic strain of 70s power-pop. Bursting with catchy melodies and chunky guitars, it's a perfect taster for one of the great pop records of 2009. “Night Falls With Vertigo” here sees vinyl for the first time, and its glam-tinged rush marks this as no mere b-side. Quality timeless pop is the game here, and Bricolage are rapidly making a reputation for themselves as a band to keep your ears open for. Tracklist: “Turn U Over” and “Night Falls With Vertigo”. |

| San Francisco’s Brilliant Colors have staked-out a unique spot in the indie music landscape. Inspired in equal parts by post-punk DIY fervor and the spiky pop of C86 and early Flying Nun/Creation label output, they hearken back to a time when the best tunes came out on 7” singles and weekends were spent digging through the stacks at your favorite local record shop. Their 2009 album, Introducing, is one of the finest debuts in recent memory, combining guitar buzz with dreamy melodies and rushing rhythms into some dream combination of The Dils and Shop Assistants. Now the band is back with their first new recordings since that great album, and boy are they winners. “Never Mine” is simply 1:49 of punk-pop perfection, singer/guitarist Jess Scott’s spare riff underpinned by Diane Anastasio’s steady thump and Michelle Hill’s busy, melodic bassline. It’s Brilliant Colors in a nutshell: crunchy garage punk played with total purposefulness, leavened by an instinctive pop sense. On the flip side the pace picks up for “Kissing’s Easy”: all rolling snares and frantic guitar strum and Jess’ echoey vocal sass. Like all the best classic punk tunes it’s over just a little too soon, leaving you no option but to turn the record over and play it all over again.Recorded with DIY simplicity by Ty Segall, who knows a bit about garage pop himself, the minimal sound fits the bands tune like a glove. This great single hones Brilliant Colors’ spiky, angular crash-pop and points to a very interesting 2010 for the band. Tracklist: “Never Mine” and “Kissing’s Easy”. |

| CDEP + 7”. You needn’t be out of touch with contemporary music or a nostalgic remnant of some other, long-past era to suspect that pop has, by and large, lost its sense of romance. Not only in terms of its willingness to lyrically explore the lexicon of love without the escape clause of postmodern irony, but the romance of unashamedly grand and eccentric gestures – the inherent romance of outsiders seeking to gently subvert the pop song, reconstructing it as something familiar yet foreign, classicist yet newfangled. Think of the Human League’s “Dare!”, ostensibly a collection of love songs made to sound like science fiction; or New Order’s plainspoken anti-poetry couched in synthetic symphonies that were the very antithesis of the everyday. It is this largely abandoned idea of the velvet melody in the robotic glove to which Champagne Riot aspires. And with its debut EP, “Paris and I”, you hear it realized. Tracklist CDEP: “Scandinavian Warfare”, “Music To My Ears”, “I Dream About You At Night” and “Before We Wave Goodbye”. Tracklist 7”: “Heroes Of Our Time” and “Blank Moon Rising”. |

| LA-based musician Devon Williams has been making quite a name for himself over the last few years, splitting time between working with folk/performance band Lavender Diamond, playing with up-and-coming power-pop sensations The Champagne Socialists and all the while developing and recording his own baroque pop songs under his own name. Ably abetted by friends Allen Bleye and Greg Arnold, Williams spent a year and a half painstakingly piecing together a beautiful, coherent set of songs to form one very unique album. The fruit of this labour was the brilliant album “Carefree”, released in 2008 on Ba Da Bing. Demonstrating a knack for crafting timeless pop that’s equal parts Brill Building and Topanga Canyon, Williams hearkened back to great songwriters like Nilsson, Chilton, Downes and Westerberg. Buoyed by Wall of Sound production, economical arrangements and a wealth of 12-string jangle, “Carefree” is a perfect pop record in the truest sense, a record bursting with melody that rewards repeated listens. Now we’re quite excited to welcome Devon to the Slumberland family with this excellent new single, a taster for his upcoming Slumberland album. “Sufferer” adds a bit of new wave flavor to the mix, the chorused and reverb-laden guitars reminiscent of mid-period Cure or perhaps the power-pop of Tommy Keene or Let’s Active. The tune is another Williams future-classic, instantly memorable and charming with its driving elegance. “Who Cares About Forever” also impresses, a slow-dance simmer with a wonderful melody and soaring, spare guitar jangle. Both songs reinforce Williams’ status as one of our finest song-writers and arrangers, and are ample evidence that his next album will be something quite special indeed. Tracklist: “Blue Genes” and “Young Runaways”. |

| Inspired equally by ‘78-’79 punk (Buzzcocks, Swell Maps) and ‘80s and ‘90s pop (This Poison!, Television Personalities, Boyracer, Sportique), The Crabapples were a tough little Bay Area four-piece that exploded briefly on the scene a few years back. Loud but melodic, their specialty was short, catchy tunes played with sloppy abandon. Live shows clocked in at around 15 minutes and this 4-song EP is an ideal keepsake of The Crabapples effervescent charms. | Love Is A Wave |
Slumberland
| Crystal Stilts burst out of Brooklyn in 2008 to become one of the most talked about bands in years. Perfecting a sound that ably mixes post-punk gloom with classic 60s pop & garage, Suicide-ish 50s buzz/twang and a dash of 80s jangle, Crystal Stilts capped the year with the release of their amazing debut album, “Alight Of Night”. Rightly recognized as one of the best albums of the year, “Alight Of Night” won rave reviews all over the place. Tours with Vivian Girls and Love Is All only added to the excitement, building anticipation for Crystal Stilts’ next record. This ace single features two brand-new songs not to be found on their album. “Love Is A Wave” is a firm favorite of the band’s live show, a perfect two-minute pop nugget in the best punk rock tradition. Fired by an insistent fast-strummed riff, an eager beat and barely-contained feedback, “Love Is A Wave” is an instant classic that stands tall with tunes like “Never Understand” and “I Heard Her Call My Name” in the noise-pop pantheon. B-side “Sugarbaby” is no slouch either, sounding for all the world like The Clean if they had been produced by Lee Hazlewood back in Arizona in the late 50s. With a spookily evocative keyboard line, breathless backing vocals and undistorted twang, “Sugarbaby” could be from 1959, or 1969, or 1989. But it’s pure 2009, and another great example of how Crystal Stilts have managed to mine rock’s past and create something entirely new and crucial for today. | A two track 7” single from Stockholm quartet Elenette, with the title track taken from their recently released debut album “Neurosor”, also on their own Meta Rekords. After a couple of now sold out CDR’s, the concept of Elenette is still to make intellectual synthpop music with its roots in the Swedish early 80’s synthpop scene, and Lustans Lakejer in particular. Together with the saxophones and the gifted and humorous lyrics in Swedish, the main part about gender issues, Elenette has created their own brilliant Swedish academic pop style! Elefant
| Carlos Valderrama and crew gave us one of the most marvelous pop discs we had heard in a long time last year; taking influence from the great Italian pop singers of the sixties and seventies, and combining it with modern influences like Belle & Sebastian and La Casa Azul, they made a fierily lit disc, full of dreamlike arrangements, tremendously immediate and inevitable melodies. Now we get two compositions in green color vinyl, limited edition format as a continuation of that great debut album. On side A we have “Mondo Fitness”, a song that reminds us of the Italian group’s ability to make indubitable hits while, at the same time, filling them with elegance and delicacy. On the other side, side B, “Diego Mon Amour” offers a more restrained facet of the band, that fills itself with a Mediterranean sound between Marseille and Salvador de Bahía, between the French chanson and bossa nova: a seaside cocktail while we watch the sunrise, after spending the night dancing in the most unimaginable bars. Because, as you know, staying in shape is important. Tracklist: “Mondo Fitness” and “Diego Mon Amour”. |

| Brilliant debut single from Stockholm’s Kissing Mirrors, a band formed by Per Johansson (who used to write for the Benno fanzine). He is the musical director of the band and writes the lyrics, makes the sleeves... i e everything except the music itself. In this way Kissing Mirrors is very much a reflection of his personal taste in pop culture: “Knives sharpening, girls combing the beards of goats, Kissing Mirrors are coming to town. The heavy suitcase that they’re carrying around is filled with bloody handprints, ominous shadows, dubious literature, a kiss from a ghost, and the two muses Euterpe and Polyhymnia shackled and chained. Their aim is to offer an even mix of jangly indiepop, romantic flutes, white fake-funk, and delirious pretentions. Failure to do so will cause them to take a direct flight to France to strangle a child on Serge Gainsbourg’s tomb.” The band is something of a Swedish indiepop supergroup featuring members of The Honeydrips, Action Biker, Florian, Twig and Hanna Fahl (of P3 Pop fame). This single is really well-orchestrated and holds two real Pop gems, refreshing in the way the lyrics and the music work together/oppose each other. Highly recommended! |

| Passion For Water |

| A whole year has passed since their last record release (the debut album “Survival Strategies In A Modern World”), but now Liechtenstein are back! During this year the girls have, among other things, visited the US East Coast for a tour, travelled around in Europe (including a show in Vaduz, Liechtenstein!), and a new bass player - Ulrika Mild from synthpop band Compute - has joined the band. The new single “Passion For Water”, the fifth one from Liechtenstein, displays a somewhat new sound. The patented vocal harmonies are of course still present, as well as the feel for making fantastic pop melodies, but the sound is clearer, and the melodies more summery and groovy.
The jangly title track is probably the most dancy Liechtenstein song so far, and it brings to mind an imaginary eighties British beach party, where Mighty Mighty, The Siddeleys, The Desert Wolves and The Man From Delmonte have been mixed into a cooling pop cocktail. With the trumpet raising “Passion For Water” to new heights, and the careful arrangements and beautiful vocal harmonies reminiscent of Dolly Mixture on “Spending Time With You”, this is a Liechtenstein partly searching for new directions. However, the earlier post punk influences are not forgotten but represented by the finishing, short and punk-oriented “On The Tram”. The single contains a download code for the mp3 files of the songs, as well as a music video for the song “On The Tram”. Tracklist: “Passion For Water”, “Spending Time With You” and “On The Tram”. |

The title track “Apathy”, which offers a contemplation of an alternative reality, is built upon plenty of beautifully arranged vocal harmonies and proves once again that between a sweet sounding pop song and a protest emerges a sparkling assembly. On the flipside you’ll find the dymanic and stirring “Security By Design” where Liechtenstein this time has brightened the sound with a slightly Mexican sounding trumpet, almost like it was cut out from a Californian masterpiece anno 1968. Included is a code that allows you to download the songs in mp3 format. Tracklist: “Apathy” and “Security By Design”. |

Their influences are Talulah Gosh, The Popguns, The Flatmates, The Shop Assistants, The Primitives and, of course, The Rosehips. “Dream on Daisy” is their debut 7” and it’s pure C86 indie pop heaven. The band previously released a split 7” with The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart on Atomic Beat Records and a 3” CDR on Cloudberry. Finally, and quite excitingly, Cloudberry have finally, finally released “Dream On Daisy” by the sorely missed The Parallelograms. If you’ve never heard the Parallelograms, and I envy you the delight of discovery, think The Rosehips, Talulah Gosh, the best bits of C86 and Subway records, girl vocals and more than a touch of charm. Tracklist: “Dream On Daisy”, “Papageno” and “Making Faces”. |

| As a founding member, songwriter, instrumentalist and vocalist in Vivian Girls and drummer and occasional vocalist in Crystal Stilts, Frankie Rose has been an integral part of two of the most highly acclaimed and influential groups to come out of Brooklyn’s still-vital music scene in the past several years. Her solo project not only reflects the aesthetic earmarks of both those groups, but it also reveals her as a fully-formed artist in her own right. Ms. Rose’s music is haunted by the ghosts of 60s girl group, Brill Building, and 80s and 90s noise pop in equal measure. It’s a spooky, lovely sound – Frankie’s ethereal yet affectation-free voice swirling in a sea of church-like harmonies over a bed of tambourines, bells, and propulsive drumming. Recalling in spirit such groups as The Aislers Set and Black Tambourine, Frankie’s music is both timeless and immediate, both deeply personal and completely universal. Pitchfork cited her song “Where Do You Run To?” as one of the best of 2008, and now with much anticipation we are excited to bring you Frankie’s debut 7” Recorded at Marlborough Farms Studio with Gary Olson, Kyle Forrester and Crystal Stilts’ J.B. Townsend, “Thee Only One” is a perfect slice of surf-tinged noise-pop. Laden with rumbling reverb and tangy guitar twang, it’s an ideal tune with which to wrap up another (almost) endless summer. On the flip, “Hollow Life” is a more subdued affair, spectral psychedelia that resembles nothing so much as Opal’s Kendra Smith at her most haunting. Building to a mesmerizing crescendo, “Hollow Life” is a sublime complement to “Thee Only One”, rounding out this excellent single in fine fashion and marking Ms. Rose as a talent to watch. Tracklist: “Thee Only One” and “Hollow Life”. |

| In the grand tradition of great pop music from Glasgow come Sexy Kids. Featuring three members of the sadly departed Royal We, Sexy Kids specialize in spiky post-pop with the emphasis on POP. Drawing comparisons to groups like Girls At Our Best and The Raincoats, Sexy Kids tunes never take the most direct route, rather they revel in finding a roundabout path to that killer chorus. Listening to “Sisters Are Forever”, the adjectives charming, playful and earnest spring readily to mind. It’s a massive tune, with enough drive, energy and smarts to mark it as a future classic. “Drown Me” is more minimal, a skeletal jangle hanging on 8th note hi-hats, handclaps and a la-la chorus. Pure magic, and a perfect complement to the punkish pop of “Sisters Are Forever”. This is Sexy Kids’ debut single, and on the strength of these two ace tunes we think you'll be eagerly awaiting more from them. Tracklist: “Sisters Are Forever” and “Drown Me”. |

| Fresh from their tour with The Cribs, and inclusion on the Rough trade Indiepop 2009 album, Brighton-based Shrag release their 6th single, and first new material since their acclaimed debut album. “Rabbit Kids” is another fine chance to get acquainted with the band’s charms. The oblique title and muffled production again suggest the early DIY movement. The surging boy-girl chorus and exposed nerves could almost entice you to visit MySpace again. We don’t hear the full story, but the scene is one of painful departure: “Why don’t you just stay?/ It’s hard to see you fall apart that way.” Little details - “The hand in palm/ The coral dawn” - help what sounds like personal heartache resonate for a wider world. It doesn’t hurt that the song is bright, scrappy, and exuberantly melodic enough to rank alongside tracks by Love Is All, The Long Blondes, or early Los Campesinos!. Tracklist: “Rabbit Kids” and “Erratic Fictions”. |

| Twig was one of the many bands who showed up during the early 00s in Stockholm – a very creative era for the Swedish indiepop music scene – put out a few CDR releases, and then fell silent for a few years… That is why, when American indiepop label Cloudberry released their double A-side ”Ciao Ciao Bomb / Wentworth” as the first vinyl single on the label, we were both surprised and excited, as we had presumed that they had quit playing together. This was of no importance however, as one of the best Swedish bands around had suddenly re-emerged – no doubt influenced by British 80s pop and inumerable hours spent at libraries in the Swedish capital. Singer Henrik Linden’s Edwyn Collins-like voice combined with Mathias Nilsson’s chiming, jangly guitars (just the way they sounded during the heydays of Felt) completely blew our minds! Later followed a brilliant debut album, “Life After Ridge”, on Peruvian label Plastilina, celebrated gigs… and yet another long wait for new releases from this magnificent three-piece. So, it is with great pride We present a new double A-side single with the band. On ”Hourglass / Scattered Dreams” we meet the very same Twig that we know from their earlier releases, only with a more refined sound. Ville Hopponen from Finnish pop elegants Cats On Fire makes a guest appearance behind the drums which, on “Hourglass”, adds new dynamics and energy to the rhythm section on this Twig hit, where they succeed in sounding both explosive and moderate at the same time. On the flip side we find ”Scattered Dreams”, a more melancohlic tune, where Kalle Berglund sets the mood by joining the band on saxophone. All neatly wrapped up in the characteristic fable sleeve design by Joakim Bengtsson this ressembles nothing else today. The parts may be familiar, but the whole, with Henrik Lindens sharp lyrics, turns into something of their own. Something we dare say is unique today. Included is a code that allows you to download the songs in mp3 format. Tracklist: ”Hourglass” and ”Scattered Dreams”. |

| We Are Soldiers We Have Guns is the solo project of Malin Dahlberg (Douglas Heart, Laurel Music). On this thematic 7” single, the first vinyl release on Lavender, she makes cover versions of two well-known songs from the music history: Cat Stevens’ “Wild World” and Marvin Gaye’s “Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home)”. Malin herself has written a piece about her thoughts on these two songs: “I did not record these songs so that couples can chuckle recognizingly over their couple dinners and comment on how odd it sounds when the girl with the baby voice sings these oh so masculine songs. / I did not record them in some kind of radical revolt against the sexist crap in the mainstream radio,in an attempt to put people on an exlusive diet of Crass instead. That would be stupid. / I recorded them because I wanted for once to be the girl who tells her little boy about the wild world out there, and the gal who is always on the roam. Most of the time, in popular music, only men get to roam and teach. / Women in pop lyrics are shelters from the storm, still around the morning after, saying show me show me show me how you do that trick. / These songs are me pointing that out. And trying hard to be something else.” |

| GREGORY WEBSTER |
7"
| Promised Land |
Slumberland/Where It´s At Is Where You Are
| Gregory first emerged during the mid-80s UK C86 scene with Razorcuts, who hit on a sound somewhere between the 12 string heavy folk-rock sound of mid-60s LA and the characterful pop sensibilities of the UK post-punk scene. The Carousel soon followed, a gorgeously out-of-time Psyche-Folk duo formed with Talulah Gosh founder member Elizabeth Price. After the acoustic simplicity of his first solo LP “My Wicked Wicked Ways” in 1995, Gregory put together perhaps his most prolific (and noisy) outfit, Sportique, with ex-TV Personality Mark Flunder and Heavenly’s Amelia Fletcher & Rob Pursey. “Promised Land” sees Gregory returning to matters of the heart, utilizing the acoustic 12 string based sound familiar to those who have seen his regular Popfest performances in recent years. Although never foolish enough to adopt the mannerisms of another culture for his own, Gregory’s love of American folk and country greats such as Willie Nelson and Hank Williams clearly shines through. In fact the b-side is a radically different interpretation of Hank Williams’ lesser known classic “Won’t You Sometimes Think Of Me?”. Simplicity rules throughout, complementing the naked honestly of the songwriting. Gregory’s signature 12 string sound is augmented by haunting harmonium accompaniment from The Birthday Girl (Vatican Cellars) and beautifully uplifting vocal flourishes provided by Pam Berry of the legendary Black Tambourine. As Gregory dreams of love away from the glare of city lights, take a ride out to the country with him on this beautifully packaged return to vinyl. |
The fruit of this labor was the brilliant album “Carefree”, released in 2008 on Ba Da Bing. Demonstrating a knack for crafting timeless pop that’s equal parts Brill Building and Topanga Canyon, Williams hearkened back to great songwriters like Nilsson, Chilton, Downes and Westerberg. Buoyed by Wall of Sound production, economical arrangements and a wealth of 12-string jangle, Carefree is a perfect pop record in the truest sense, a record bursting with melody that rewards repeated listens. Now we’re quite excited to welcome Devon to the Slumberland family with this excellent new single, a taster for his upcoming Slumberland album. “Sufferer” adds a bit of new wave flavor to the mix, the chorused and reverb-laden guitars reminiscent of mid-period Cure or perhaps the power-pop of Tommy Keene or Let's Active. Tracklist: “Sufferer” and “Who Cares About Forever”. |

| PHIL WILSON |
7"
| Industrial Strength |
Slumberland
| As main songwriter and singer of mid-80s English pop legends the June Brides, Phil Wilson's influence looms large over nearly all UK guitar pop since. A bridge between early 80s groups like Josef K and the later Creation scene, Phil and the June Brides kept the flame burning for earnest, tuneful pop underpinned by fiercely strummed, jangly guitars. Following the dissolution of the June Brides, Phil released a handful of solo singles on Creation and Caff, then, soured on the music business, he retired. His legend has only grown though, with bands as diverse as the Manic Street Preachers, Belle and Sebastian, The Aislers Set and Franz Ferdinand citing Phil and the Brides as important influences. And now the silence is broken, and Slumberland releases Phil's Industrial Strength double 7" EP. As a path to getting back into songwriting, Phil has decided to learn other people's songs, “pulling them apart, seeing how they worked and putting them back together in the wrong order.” Industrial Strength is the first fruit of those experiments. Recording at home, totally solo, using acoustic guitars, mandolin and banjo, Phil has re-worked four songs from Throbbing Gristle, Kraftwerk, Faust and contemporary German band S/T. While guitar folk/pop and experimental rock might not seem like the most obvious combination, Phil has dug deep to expose the melodic roots of these songs. The layered acoustic instruments and skeletal programmed beats lay down a mesmerizing drone-folk groove, and the result is a wonderful, hypnotic record that reveals fresh nuances on each listen. It's a very auspicious new beginning for Mr. Wilson that points to more fascinating music yet to come. Tracklist: “Neon Lights”, “United”, “It's A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl” and “What Happens... Happens”. |
