The Zebras
Lost & Lonesome
The Zebras’ bag is a driving, jangly one, complete with subtle boy/girl harmonies and catchy singsong melodies, recalling Teenage Fanclub at their most laid-back. The songs here on their self-titled debut album are dense in arrangement twists while the lyrics teeter between oblique and eyebrow-raising, with lead singer Jeremy Cole’s bashful higher register at times bearing a passing resemblance to Michael Stipe or Wayne Coyne. Recorded in the band’s formative hometown of Brisbane, the Go-Betweens’ sound also serves as an obvious influence. Tracklist: “The Forces Of Light (Preloading)”, “Look Confident”, “French Chicks”, “Three Minutes”, “Too Bad”, “Itchin' For A Fight”, “Biffin’s Bridge”, “Old Men” and “Lucky Pierre”.

Worry A Lot
Lost & Lonesome
More of the jangling, shimmering propulsion that’s become The Zebras’ trademark, though with a greater depth and broader scope to the writing. Main vocalist Jeremy Cole remains in equal parts cheeky and oblique on songs like opener “You Look Ready” and classic-to-be “I Have Decided”, while new member Greg Brady rings in with the warm and concise “Cumbersome”, proving this band’s full range is as yet uncharted. Memorable closer “The Nightmare” recalls The Go-Betweens at their most tender. All this in mind, the focus rarely strays far from the guitars - most songs on this album contain at least twenty-four strings’ worth! Tracklist: ”You Look Ready”, “Worry A Lot”, “I Quit”, “Marching”, “Patient To The End”, “Cumbersome”, “Science Competition”, “Fine Lines”, “Doong Doong”, “I Have Decided”, “Miss World/Don’t Cry” and “The Nightmare”. Highly recommended!
