| Country Music - Songs For Keith Girdler |
Siesta
| How can we conceptualize a tribute to one of the most influential personalities in our musical life? Well, to keep it simple this tribute is a pure labour of love and respect but also a worthwhile charity effort. “Country Music - Songs for Keith Girdler” is a polished compilation that was put together by Keith’s close friend, Richard Preece (Lovejoy) to raise money for the Martletts Hospice in Hove, the institution that looked after Keith so generously and devotedly. Siesta Records is very proud to release this compilation for this worthy cause. All proceeds from the sale of this cd will go directly to helping raise funds for the Martlet’s Hospice Hove (East Sussex). The contributing artists have all donated their talents for the merited cause. The record is not a mere document or chronicle, all songs are original in every sense, exclusive or unreleased and recorded or provided specifically for this project. We trust you will thoroughly enjoy this diverse group of talented and iconic people and contribute to charity. There are recovered treasures from the legendary Creation acts The Times and Biff Bang Pow! but also breathtaking performances of solid bands connected to the reference labels: Sarah, Siesta, Matinee, Marsh-Marigold, Vinyl Japan, Sub-pop and Elefant (The Orchids, Club 8, Louis Philippe, Would-Be-Goods, The Wake, St Christopher, Hal, Trembling Blue Stars, Aberdeen, Lovejoy…), and emotional forays of highly respected names such as The Clientele, Pete Fijalkowski or Love Dance. This 16-tracks record is an absolute must-have companion piece for all the fans of the catchy, witty, heartfelt pop songs that the indie scene has burgeoned over the last few decades (from C86 to the visions of labels such as Sarah, Subway, él or Labrador). There are numerous examples of fine songwriting, subtle sophistication and plenty of rich and interesting sounds within an inventive framework that evokes the spirit of Keith (do not miss the phenomenal and respectful cover versions of Blueboy’s songs by Louis Philippe, Love Dance and Lovejoy), his affinities and taste (he loved all these sounds). Everything is goosebump-raising. Think of this as an interesting companion to all his vast and vital body of work. A beloved and revered member of the indie pop community as the vocalist of Blueboy, Arabesque and Beaumont, Keith passed away on May 15, 2007 after a long battle with cancer. In addition to playing music, Keith also served as a social worker and as the Volunteer Services Manager at the Age Concern care facility in Eastbourne, England. Words cannot really come close to describing the feelings that we have about the sad loss of Keith Girdler one year ago. Both his music and personality made a lasting impression on us and we want the flame to keep burning through the release of this record. Keith wanted to be remembered with “happiness and smiles”. Tracklist: St Christopher “Can't Forget You”, The Wake “Crush The Flowers”, Pete Fijalkowski “Downsizing”, Lovejoy “Melancholia”, Hal “Down”, Trembling Blue Stars “Soft Evening, Brilliant Morning”, Louis Philippe “Lazy Thunderstorms”, Club 8 “What I'm Dreaming Of Is Something I Could Have”, The Clientele “Breathe In Now”, The Times “Sold”, Would-Be-Goods “I Believe You Cassandra”, Aberdeen “Baby I Don't Care (Instrumental)”, Love Dance “His London”, The Orchids “The Lost Star”, Biff Bang Pow! “Back To The Start” and Blueboy “80’s Diaries”. Highly recommended! |

Slumberland

| There was just so much great pop in the early-to-mid 90’s that sometimes it’s easy to forget all the names, to get lost in the back catalogs of the Sarah’s and Creation’s and overlook the lesser-known labels that also made it happen. Australia’s Summershine was one of those labels, lovingly run by Jason Reynolds and dedicated to releasing classic pop records. They succeeded admirably, putting out single after single of amazing pop and making it look so easy. It’s hard to know where to start: the three Sugargliders songs are rare-as-hen’s-teeth and of course brilliant. The Orchids-ish folk-pop of The Rainyard and Tender Engines still sounds great today, up there with all our favorite Sarah releases. The shoegaze drone of Jupiter is pure bliss, and the Ride-style loud-pop of Afterglow and Blindside makes a splendid racket. Autohaze and The Earthmen rock out, too, adding a dose of Dinosaur flavor. Tracklist: The Sugargliders “Give Me Some Confidence”, Tender Engines “Girl From The Hinterland”, Autohaze “Hanging Round”, The Earthmen “Stacey's Cupboard”, Blindside “To Be Found”, Tender Engines “A Legend Never Fails”, The Rainyard “Hell Bent Suicidal Over You Baby”, The Sugargliders “Police Me”, Blindside “Ether”, Jupiter “Lost”, Autohaze “Undecided”, Tender Engines ”Pop Song I”, The Rainyard “1,000 Years”, Ripe “We're All Trying To Get There”, The Sugargliders “Sway”, Jupiter “Leave The Ground”, Afterglow
“Fall Behind” and The Earthmen “Too Far Down”. |

With exclusive tracks from Airport Girl, The Fairways, The Guild League, Harper Lee, Kosmonaut, The Liberty Ship, Lovejoy, The Lucksmiths, Melodie Group, Pale Sunday, The Pines, Pipas, Simpático, Slipslide, The Snowdrops, Sportique, The Visitors, Gregory Webster, The Windmills and Would-Be-Goods, this compilation is an essential release for all fans of the label and associated bands. Cherry Red
| As part of Cherry Red’s 25th anniversary in 2003 the label released, for the first time ever on DVD, the visual accompaniment to one of the label’s most recognised musical titles “Pillows & Prayers”. The original “Pillows & Prayers” compilation album was released in the early 1980’s and went on to top the Indie Chart, spending almost a year in the top 30. To this day it is still one of the most acknowledged releases from the label. The “Pillows & Prayers” video was released a few years after the album, and provides the main focus of the DVD. Many of Cherry Red’s most popular acts are featured, including Everything But The Girl, Eyeless In Gaza, The Monochrome Set and The Marine Girls. There are also three bonus tracks, not included on the original video release and featuring original promo material from Medium Medium, Eyeless In Gaza and The Monochrome Set. The bonus material also includes a fascinating interview with the people behind the original “Pillows & Prayers” concept, Cherry Red Records founder Iain McNay and A&R man Mike Alway, who provide a great insight into the early days of the label. Tracklist: Marine Girls “A Place In The Sun”, Jane “It’s A Fine Day”, Kevin Hewick “Feathering The Nest”, Fantastic Something “If She Doesn’t Smile (It'll Rain)”, Eyeless In Gaza “New Risen”, Everything But The Girl “On My Mind”, The Monochrome Set “Jet Set Junta”, Medium Medium “Hungry So Angry”, Eyeless In Gaza “Veil Like Calm”, Monochrome Set “Jacobs Ladder” plus bonus material; interview With “Pillows & Prayers” ‘Originators’ Iain Mcnay and Mike Alway. Where It´s At Is Where You Are
| The songs of Bruce Springsteen have been re-born in the able hands of 38 indie, folk and underground acts, including the Wave Pictures, Darren Hayman (ex-Hefner), Glam Chops (with Eddie Argos from Art Brut) and even a fiddle solo from the Velvet Underground’s Doug Yule. The double album is named “Play Some Pool, Skip Some School, Act Real Cool” (a line from the classic “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)”), and is brought to you from the ever reliable Where It's At Is Where You Are label. These acts have been inspired by Springsteen’s woodsman folk, tender ballads, fist-pumping anthems and emotional rock; their interpretations of Springsteen’s back catalogue – from the classics to the rarely visited side roads – reveal the breadth of The Boss’s influence and the inspiration his rich career gives to many bands from different strands of today’s underground. Tracklist: The Wave Pictures “Racing In The Street”, Jennifer O’Connor “Cover Me”, Airport Girl “The River”, MJ Hibbett & The Validators “Glory Days”, Shaun Wolf Wortis “She’s The One”, Glam Chops “Born In The USA”, Jeff Mellin “Brilliant Disguise/Brilliancy Medley”, Lucinda Black Bear “Born To Run”, Darren Hanlon “The Promised Land”, Gregory Webster “You’re Missing”, Allo, Darlin’ (Featuring Paul From Hexicon) “Atlantic City”, Boy Genius “Badlands”, The Gresham Flyers “Magic”, One Milky Wimp “Johnny 99”, Thewintersleep “Dancing In The Dark”, Jeniferever “One Step Up”, Travis Elborough “My Hometown”, Pete Weiss “Candy’s Room”, Eux Autres “My Love Will Not Let You Down”, Help Stamp Out Loneliness “I’m On Fire”, Swedish Chef “Used Cars”, Hillary And The Democrats “Thunder Road”, Orange Nichole “Mansion On The Hill”, The Manhattan Love Suicides “Stolen Car”, Piney Gir “Waiting On A Sunny Day”, The School “Hungry Heart”, Harvey Williams “I Wanna Marry You”, The Vatican Cellars “Darkness On The Edge Of Town”, Joel Mellin “The Rising”, The Foxgloves “Downbound Train”, The Andersen Tapes “Prove It All Night”, DJ Downfall featuring Amelia Fletcher “If I Should Fall Behind”, Darren Hayman “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)”, Summer Cats vs Motifs “Born To Add”, Alexander’s Festival Hall “Empty Sky”, Butcher Boy “Streets Of Philadelphia”, Brontosaurus Chorus “Because The Night” and The Volence Jack Off “No Surrender”. |

Matinée

| Brilliant new collection of songs from Matinée’s truly international coterie of popstars. The disc kicks off with a firm favorite from Denmark’s Northern Portrait entitled “Stirling Moss” which establishes a car racing theme rather nicely. Scottish popkids Strawberry Whiplash answer the challenge with new smash “Boy In The Bubble Car”, while Australian legends The Lucksmiths deliver their swansong recording with the predictably stunning “Get-to-bed Birds”. Sweden’s The Electric Pop Group is represented with perhaps their strongest song to date “Believers”, while Clay Hips - American expats living in Germany and Ireland - don’t disappoint channeling their inner Pet Shop Boys with “Disappointed”. The album’s centerpoint sees the return of England’s mighty Tender Trap after four years with the new classic “Danger Overboard”, and Australia has its second contender with the very welcome return of Simpático and new favorite “Australian Idle”. Finland’s Cats On Fire begin the year with a fantastic new song called “The Hague”, while Scotland is back in fine form with Bubblegum Lemonade and “Cuts Like A Dream”. Finally, American hipsters Math And Physics Club break a two-year silence with a great new song called “I Keep To Myself”, and Australia’s The Guild League soundtrack the final lap of the compilation with the lovely “Bookmark”. Demonstrating the continuing strength of the label’s roster, this timeless collection is a vital release for the Matinée faithful and a fantastic introduction to some of the best indie bands of today. Tracklist: Northern Portrait “Stirling Moss”, Strawberry Whiplash “Boy In The Bubble Car”, The Lucksmiths “Get-To-Bed Birds”, The Electric Pop Group “Believers”, Clay Hips “Disappointed”, Tender Trap “Danger Overboard”, Simpático “Australian Idle”, Cats On Fire “The Hague”, Bubblegum Lemonade “Cuts Like A Dream”, Math And Physics Club “I Keep To Myself” and The Guild League “Bookmark”. |

| Enter The Vaselines |
Sub Pop
| The Vaselines have long been celebrated by musicians and music enthusiasts across genres and across the globe, including super-fan Kurt Cobain. Sub Pop’s release of “Enter The Vaselines” is an opportunity for those already familiar with the Scottish band’s brief career to delve deeper into their body of work, while those new to their music can experience firsthand why so many hold them in such high regard. This new collection is effectively a deluxe-edition reissue of the 1992 Sub Pop release “The Way Of The Vaselines” with a new title and new cover art from the band, and a whole lot of new material (the entirety of the 17-song second CD/third LP has been added). Originally mastered from a cassette tape, “The Way Of The Vaselines” compiled the band’s two EPs (“Son Of A Gun” and “Dying For It”) and their sole LP release (“Dum-Dum”). Enter The Vaselines is the definitive triple LP/double CD Vaselines collection. It includes new mixes and re-mastered versions of everything by The Vaselines, plus never-before-heard demos, and live recordings from 1986 in Bristol and 1988 in London. This triple(!) LP includes a coupon for free download of the entire album. Tracklist: “Son Of A Gun”, “Rory Rides Me Raw”, “You Think You’re A Man”, “Dying For It”, “Molly’s Lips”, “Teenage Superstars”, “Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam”, “Sex Sux (Amen)”, “Slushy”, “Monsterpussy”, “Bitch”, “No Hope”, “Oliver Twisted”, “The Day I Was A Horse”, “Dum Dum”, “Hairy”, “Lovecraft”, “Dying For It (The Blues)”, “Let’s Get Ugly”, “Son Of A Gun (Demo)”, “Rosary Job (Demo)”, “Red Poppy (Demo)”, “Son Of A Gun (Live In Bristol)”, “Rosary Job (Live In Bristol)”, “Red Poppy (Live In Bristol)”, “Rory Rides Me Raw (Live In Bristol)”, “You Think You’re A Man (Live In Bristol)”, “Dying For It (Live In London)”, “Monsterpussy (Live In London)”, “Let’s Get Ugly (Live In London)”, “Molly’s Lips (Live In London)”, “The Day I Was A Horse (Live In London)”, “The Day I Was A Horse (Again) (Live In London)”, “Sex Sux (Amen) (Live In London)”, “I Didn’t Know I Loved You (‘Til I Saw You Rock ‘N’ Roll) (Live In London)” and “Teenage Superstars (Live In London)”. |

| “Carlton Gardens” marks the return of gorgeous songwriters Martin King and David Platten, who, together with The Vermont Sugar House collaborator Richard Jones, are all known from Manchester’s jangle pop heroes The Desert Wolves. If you fell in love with their pop songs on Firestation’s compilation “Pontification” some decade ago you won’t be dissapointed – their sensibility for pop melodies is still there. This album contains the songs from their debut single “Braveheart”, released in 1999, and lots of new songs, and some different mix versions too. A grand return to the indie pop scene. Tracklist: “The Westminster Bridge Song”, “Just Wandering Around”, “Technicolour Memories (P.S. We Love You)”, “Braveheart”, “Solo Living”, “I Only Ever”, “Running”, “Vanishing Point (The Bible Of Dreams Mix)”, “Vanishing Point (The Bride Mix)”, “Walking Distance”, “Just Wandering Around (The Cello Mix)”, “Absolutely”, “Braveheart (The Organ Mix)” and “Technical Memories (The Deborah Kerr Mix)”. Highly recommended! |

| VIVIAN GIRLS |
LP
| Everything Goes Wrong |
In The Red
| Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls are back with “Everything Goes Wrong”, released almost exactly a year after In The Red’s reissue of their self-titled debut. The band have taken their time with this new album and recorded it in six days - rather than the three their debut took - though many of the songs were still recorded in single takes. Over the last year, the Vivian Girls have toured the US and Europe extensively, received a considerable amount of national and international press, sparked fierce debate as to whether they are a refreshing blast of unselfconscious punk rock energy or a crew of contemptible, incompetent posers and, perhaps most significant of all, become the subject of a question on the Jeopardy game show. “Everything Goes Wrong” is a darker, moodier album than its predecessor, with a couple tracks clocking in at almost twice the length of anything on their debut. That said, the influences remain the same; Ramones, ‘60s girl groups, surf, indie pop, etc., etc. This is immediately classic stuff. Watch for constant touring in late ‘09 and ‘10. Tracklist: “Walking Alone at Night”, “I Have No Fun”, “Can’t Get Over You”, “Desert”, “Tension”, “Survival”, “The End”, “When I’m Gone”, “Out for the Sun”, “I’m Not Asleep”, “Double Vision”, “You’re My Guy” and “Before I Start to Cry”. |

| At last the reissue of Vivian Girls’ self-titled debut album is here! This fabulous NY three piece sold out the first (quite limited) pressing in two weeks! And when you’ve listened to some songs by Katy, Cassie and Frankie you’ll not be surprised by that fact because they’ve made some quite fantastic pop songs. Their music is kind of a mix of punk, noise pop and C-86, where echoes of Shop Assistants, Talulah Gosh, The Aislers Set, The Jesus And Mary Chain and Slumber Party can be heard. On top of it all some gorgeous three-part-vocals. How about that!? Tracklist: “All The Time”, “Such A Joke”, “Wild Eyes”, “Going Insane”, “Tell The World”, “Where Do You Run To”, “Damaged”, “No”, “Never See Me Again” and “I Believe In Nothing”. Highly recommended! |
