TEARS RUN RINGS
CD
Always, Sometimes, Seldom, Never
Clairecords
When members of Tears Run Rings didn’t play well with a big-shot producer, they threw away the old material and set off to create an album on their own. There was only one dilemma: they were now living in three different cities. This Portland and Seattle by way of L.A. collaboration was accomplished in the style of the Postal Service; occasional weekends together produced the frameworks for songs that took shape as they swapped tracks using CDRs and the good ‘ole internet. Three years and one self-released EP later, Tears Run Rings presents its debut full length, “Always, Sometimes, Seldom, Never”. Tears Run Rings features ex-members of The Autocollants, Laura Watling, and both of the masterminds behind Shelflife Records. These pop veterans have abandoned their twee roots and traded it for dense, wall-of-sound arrangements and aggressive distorted guitars - but that’s not to say they have forgotten their pop sensibilities. TRR distances themselves from 90’s shoegazers with upfront vocals and catchy single-note guitar riffs. Their creation is melodically rich, brimming with layers of boy-girl vocals inspired by the harmonies of 60s groups such as The Lennon Sisters and The Caravelles. One of the album strengths is its flow through a range of different tempos and the most powerful element of “Always, Sometimes, Seldom, Never” is the deep, heartfelt (and occasionally heartbreaking) conviction heard here. But maybe this comes natural for band members who spend most of their time wishing they could just be together. Tracklist: “Happiness, Part One”, ”How Will The Others Survive?”, ”Beautiful Stranger”, ”Fall Into Light”, ”The Weight Of Love”, ”World Upside Down”, ”Waiting For The End”, ”Mind The Wires”, ”Run Run Run”, ”Send Me Back” and ”Happiness, Part Two”.

A Careless Lifestyle
Fraction Discs
After two 7” singles it’s finally time for the Göteborg duo Tillmanns first album, and “A Careless Lifestyle“ is a much longed-for debut CD. Because many of us have missed the sound of winding, ethereal guitars and sweeping, synthetic layers over minimalistic beats. The sound is well-known from a golden era when labels such as Sarah Records and Factory spread little grains of gold like The Wake, New Order, The Durutti Column, Stockholm Monsters and The Field Mice. But, there’s another thread that through the North Sea connects the Northern Britain with our West Coast: the eternal lashing of rain at bus stops, on windscreens and window-ledges. And the light after the rain: the shimmering, but with a darker undertone. The art of balancing those contrasts - maybe this is what seizes us and sends us into a soft hypnosis, that actually can make us long for the autumn to burst into splendid colours: yellow, orange, red.... Tracklist: “Heavy Rotation”, “Background”, “Hypnosis”, “Cold Hands”, “Instrumental”, “Opening”, “New Place”, “Here's A Hit With Them In Mind”, “Twist” and “Time”.

Run EP

The duo Tillmanns consists of Anders Tillman and Björn Fridholm, who make their debut with “Run EP”, four tracks with metallic guitar sounds winding through layers of icy, minimalistic synthesizers and pulsating drum machines. Life-affirming pop melodies where melancholia is right underneath the surface. Tillmanns sound like no others today, an electric dream in bleached colours accompaning rainy and windy pavements somewhere in Göteborg where echoes of The Field Mice, The Wake, My Bloody Valentine and Stockholm Monsters can be heard. Tracklist: “Run”, “My London Love”, “Twist (Spaced-Out)” and “Background”.

Every Scene Needs A Center
Magic Marker
Tullycraft is known for writing indie pop anthems. Over the years, the band has penned a handful of songs that practically define the twee movement in America. It would be a safe statement to say that the new album, “Every Scene Needs A Center”, picks up where the band’s fourth album, “Disenchanted Hearts Unite”, left off, but that would also be selling Tullycraft short. This new album, recorded entirely on analog tape, is not simply a collection of wonderfully snarky pop songs with one or two anthems thrown in, but is an entire record of ultra-catchy, smart indie pop anthems that takes aim at vampires, the English class system, goth waitresses, and much more. This time around, Tullycraft may have actually crafted a twee masterpiece. Tracklist: “The Punks Are Writing Love Songs”, “Fangs On Bats”, “Georgette Plays A Goth”, “Bored To Hear Your Heart Still Breaks”, “Clique At Night Vandals”, “Dracula Screams Of Tiger Style (Parts 1&2)”, “The Lonely Life Of The UFO Researcher”, “A Cursed Miss Maybellene”, “If You Take Away The Make-Up (Then The Vampires They Will Die)”, “Misgiving”, “The Neutron”, “One Essex Girl”, “The Secret History Of Devil’s Paw” and “We Know You’re Cute, You Told Us”.

Excellent two-track single from Stockholm guitar pop trio Twig. Listening to these lovely produced tracks is like opening a time capsule, sealed somewhere in UK around the first years of the 80’s, with a young Edwyn Collins singing over an unknown Wild Swans track… Or The Lotus Eaters covering Felt. This is the very first 7” vinyl single on Miami based Cloudberry records, known for releasing lots of great jangly pop on 3” CDR. Tracklist: “Ciao Ciao Bomb” and “Wentworth”. Highly recommended!

Hourglass and Scattered Dreams
Fraction Discs
Twig was one of the many bands who showed up during the early 00s in Stockholm – a very creative era for the Swedish indiepop music scene – put out a few CDR releases, and then fell silent for a few years… That is why, when American indiepop label Cloudberry released their double A-side ”Ciao Ciao Bomb / Wentworth” as the first vinyl single on the label, we were both surprised and excited, as we had presumed that they had quit playing together. This was of no importance however, as one of the best Swedish bands around had suddenly re-emerged – no doubt influenced by British 80s pop and inumerable hours spent at libraries in the Swedish capital. Singer Henrik Linden’s Edwyn Collins-like voice combined with Mathias Nilsson’s chiming, jangly guitars (just the way they sounded during the heydays of Felt) completely blew our minds! Later followed a brilliant debut album, “Life After Ridge”, on Peruvian label Plastilina, celebrated gigs… and yet another long wait for new releases from this magnificent three-piece. So, it is with great pride We present a new double A-side single with the band. On ”Hourglass / Scattered Dreams” we meet the very same Twig that we know from their earlier releases, only with a more refined sound. Ville Hopponen from Finnish pop elegants Cats On Fire makes a guest appearance behind the drums which, on “Hourglass”, adds new dynamics and energy to the rhythm section on this Twig hit, where they succeed in sounding both explosive and moderate at the same time. On the flip side we find ”Scattered Dreams”, a more melancohlic tune, where Kalle Berglund sets the mood by joining the band on saxophone. All neatly wrapped up in the characteristic fable sleeve design by Joakim Bengtsson this ressembles nothing else today. The parts may be familiar, but the whole, with Henrik Lindens sharp lyrics, turns into something of their own. Something we dare say is unique today. Included is a code that allows you to download the songs in mp3 format. Tracklist: ”Hourglass” and ”Scattered Dreams”.

Life After Ridge
Plastilina
”Life After Ridge” is the eagerly awaited debut album from Swedish pop trio Twig, who’s been around for a couple of years and then suddenly struck everyone by surprise with the release of the fabulous “Ciao Ciao Bomb” 7” single, released on Cloudberry earlier this year. We wrote excitingly about it, comparing the sound of Twig to that of Edwyn Collings, Wild Swans, Lotus Eaters and Felt. This is partly true when it comes to this album because the sound is much more varied than that, ranging from the dubby ending of “At Work And At Home” (with guest vocals from Sarah Nyberg Pergament a k a Action Biker) the almost Moz-like guitar popism “Please Don’t Turn Me Into A Murderer” and the New Order backdrop of ought-to-be-a-hit “Indigo”. What’s really linking this together is the excellent lyrics and songwriting. Twig is without a doubt one of the finest Swedish indiepop acts right now – although the music still sound like it’s made sometime in the 80’s, a long-time lost gem, rediscovered (maybe in a library?) and a triumphant return to the stage... no, it’s even better, because this is actually happening now! Tracklist: “Ciao Ciao Bomb”, “Indigo”, “You Look Different #2”, “Constance and her Cousin”, “At Work and at Home”, “Please Don't Turn Me Into a Murderer”, “Close Up”, “You Look Different #1”, “Devil Talking to You”, “Helen of Troy” and ”Dangerous Kind”. Highly recommended!
